Junior Guinea Pig
Hi All,
This is more of just an FYI/warning.
We usually use the silky soft hay from Little Hay Co. Their stock is coming to an end for this harvesting season so we tried some samples and Dean Hay from The Hay Experts was a hit. We have a massive Little Hay Co box so have been mixing in the silky soft Hay with the Dean hay over the past month, to ease the girls into the change.
Last week we found blood on the girls fleece, a heart attack and a vet trip later, it turns out one of the girls has an abrasion. It wasn't until a few days later that we managed to figure out what had been causing it.
The Dean hay had MASSIVE thistle/spikes in it. There wasn't a huge amount considering the size of the bag, but there was a fair amount in there. They hurt me, a human when scooping it up in my hands with other hay so can't imagine the discomfort it would cause a piggie!
I have attached some photos so you can see what I am talking about.
If anyone on here is using Dean Hay from the Hay Experts for bedding hay, or I guess even feeding hay, just to be extra careful and check through it before giving it to your piggies.
My little girlie is thankfully on the mend and we have managed to get some more silky soft and are going to try mixing it with the Cotswold Sweet Soft cut hay.
