Just this morning, I woke up to my brother shouting "I think Muffin's dead!". We all ran downstairs at once. I arrived to find my mum and brother crying and looking at the cage. There, in the cage, was a small, lifeless, guinea pig. She was laying down on her side with her eyes open. We cried for a few minutes, then I carefully lifted the little body out into a shoebox. She felt limp and cold. I cuddled her for a few minutes before putting her into the shoebox. Then my mum wrapped her up in an old cloth and took the box outside. We were in shock and didn't know what to do. So I took out Pudding (the one who died's baby) and cuddled her,still crying. Then our topic of conversation moved on to how she could have died. We all thought it must have been something she ate. Here is a tip for all of you. Never feed your piggies old food, or food that your not sure whether they can eat it or not. However, it might not have been something she ate. It could have been a stroke or heart attack. We are all very sad for her loss but we are going to get two more piggies so that Pudding and Cookie (a stubborn female) aren't lonely. RIP little one. Xx Love you so much. Xxxxxxxxxxx

Hi and welcome!

I am ever so sorry for your loss. From the way Muffin was lying, it is most likely a stroke or a heart attack during the night (as she was already cold when you found her), and she can't have suffered long. Try to take consolation from that. Both strokes and heart attacks can happen out of the blue at any age.

If had been food poisoning/ abad tummy upset from rotten veg, you'd either noticed yesterday evening that something wasn't right or she would have been very poorly this morning; it doesn't kill instantaneously. That said, please do not feed any veg that has gone off!

Here are our tips on what you can do for the companions. If possible, please date your piggies at one of our recommended rescues. There you can ensure that the girls get on with your piggies having the deciding vote, and you rehome only healthy/fully quarantined, properly sexed and guaranteed not pregnant sows.

I'm sorry about your loss. I looked to see if I could bring a smile to anyone when I got home. . but I saw your post and thought how sad your days been. I'm no piggie expert far from it. but I had one and very soon going to build a home for two. Your loss is hard but pls try remember the good fun times. Wibeka has and is helping me so great advise given. Sorry again bless Muffin. RIP
 
Sorry to hear this. She was clearly a well loved pig and that is a life well lived
