Hi everyone,
I am seeking some advice. I purchased 2 Guinea pigs just short of 2 months ago. I was told they were both females.
Then yesterday l was shocked to find one of them dead and next to her 2 dead babies.
I was really upset, as l had no idea she was pregnant.
What could have been the cause of them to all die ? it is so sad.

If the remaining Guinea pig is a male. Can 2 males live together as well as 2 females can.?
As l don't want this one remaining on it's own.

I am very sorry, what a tragedy for poor little mummy and her pups. About 20-25% of guinea pig births end up with death of mum and/or pups. The risk factor is higher if there hasn't been any special care taken through pregnancy and/or there are other stress factors. Babies can be born premature and large babies can get stuck and kill mum as well. You are welcome to post a tribute to your little girl and her pups in our Rainbow Bridge section if you wish to.

If you have only had them two months and the babies were full term she was pregnant when you got her.A pregnancy lasts ten weeks.I took on a guinea pig that turned out to be pregnant and she had a still born Prem baby.She is fine uckily but it really upset me and still does.I cried for two days.Huge hugs hun, I know how horrible it is.

I'm am so sorry for your losses, i cant imagine how horrible that must of been. can you post a picture of your other piggies private area so we can check the gender? Just so you know 100% what you are looking for with a companion.

I'm so sorry for your loss! It's possible that your other pig is still a female... she may well have been pregnant when you got her. Unfortunately pregnancy is high risk in guinea pigs and it's hard to say what went wrong to cause her death and the death of the babies. ((HUGS)) to you and so sorry!

Thank you. I have had my remaining piggy checked by a friend who is a vetenary nurse and she confirmed l have a female.

I thought the day before she had the baby she might have been.Was looking forward to a baby running around then found the still born one.She had cleaned it up and everything bless her.It was the same colours as her.
