hello, this is my first posting and thank you for letting me use your forum.
This is on behalf of my friend who is not on the internet.
She has had 2 guinea pigs (brothers) for 2years. then 3 days ago thought that 1 might have lost a little weight but was active and eating well. Last night he didn't eat his veg and noticed what she discribed as 'gunk' in the corner of his eyes. This morning the poor little mite was dead.
I would love to know if there is any information I could pass to her to prevent anything happening to the other 1, as she and her 2 little boys are quite distraught.

Aww, so sorry to hear about the little piggy. I'm afraid I couldn't tell you what may have been wrong with it. Guinea pigs are very good at hiding the fact that they are poorly.

The only thing I can suggest, if she is worried aout the one she has left, is get it to the vets ASAP to put her mind at rest and get the other one checked over.

I am sorry for your friend's loss!

There are a few things that can happen, and can strike very quickly. Guinea pigs are very good good at hiding problems.

It is important to weight them regularly; weight loss, either lots in a very short time or a regular slow loss can be one of the very few early signs that something is not right. It should be taken seriously, as should be loss of appetite - a vet should be seen as soon as possible.

It would be great if your friend would consider taking the remaining boar to a good rescue where he could choose his own new friend once she is sure that he is well and out of deep mourning.

Thank you so much for your advice. I will pass on information today, especially about the grieving process and possible re-homing.
 
Here is a list of reputable rescues. Please ring around the ones within your reach to find those that offer "boar dating" for bereaved boars. Quite a few rescue do! A bond that is founded on mutual liking has a much better chance of surviving the hormonal months.
