Hello. We are taking care of my grandpa's Chinese guinea pig. He bit my mom yesterday and we don't know what to do with him but that aside for now. There are various sounds I can't decipher at all. Can someone tell me what sounds mean what? Thank you :)

Noises can be very hard to describe so I'll link a video which explains the most commonly heard sounds. I hope this helps 🙂

Wheeking is usually at feeding time or if they want more hay. Rumble strutting is a dominance behaviour. Purring depends on their body language and the situation. They can also ‘chat’ while walking around.

I know the piggy is your grandad’s. But is there any chance you could get him a friend? They’re very social animals and shouldn’t be alone. But if he has a companion that recently passed then forgive my presumption.

His companion is the grandpa and the dog. They're with him all the time. And grandpa can't find someone with the same breed but, I'm hoping to find someone and buy him a second one because this baby is going to be a few years old now and they don't have much of a lifespan, right? That's why I am thinking about giving him another baby :) he did say he wanted to breed these before.

They do make a lot of different sounds. Looking sounds up online is likely the easiest way for you to understand them. It’s very difficult to explain their range of sounds

No amount of human contact (and certainly contact with a dog is not safe), can make up for the companionship of another guinea pig.
Their lifespan can be up to 8 years. It’s a long time for a piggy to be alone, so do look into finding him another piggy to live with, it doesn’t need to be the same breed.

Please also be sure to check the sex of the piggy that you get. I assume from saying you’ll buy that there are no rescues there. If the new one isn’t too young then you have to quarantine before you introduce them (outside of the cage). Boars need at least 150x60cm of space.

Breeding or any discussion about it is banned on this forum. When you signed up, it was in the T&Cs that you agreed to follow. So no further mention of that please.

How long are you looking after the piggy for? We’d love to see some photos.
