My two boars, Pudding & Squeak, are now permanently separated after some pretty serious fighting. We tried everything we could to reintroduce them, but we finally admitted defeat and separated them about 4 weeks ago.

Thankfully, we have a three storey cage, so Squeak has the top two levels while Pud has the bottom level with an attached C&C run during the daytime and overnight, like this:

Squeak bites and tried to climb the grids of the run, so we can't risk leaving him in there unsupervised!

They do get to see each other and/or interact with each other for a short time most days; Squeak can see Pud when he's in the run attached to the cage and they share an outdoor run in the garden (separated by C&C grids, but they can touch noses).

Of course, this isn't ideal.....Squeak in particular seems very lonely, and he has only just recovered from a pretty serious URI which he contracted the day after he was separated from Pud (the vet thought the stress of fighting/being separated might have triggered this).

I really don't want to end up with a house full of cages, that's why we went for the biggest cage we could fit in, and I really don't want to start 'collecting' piggies.......two, or maybe three at a push, is enough for me.......so my options are as follows:

option one: I could keep them as they currently are, as two solo un-neutered piggies (not ideal, as mentioned above)
option two: I could get them both neutered and get them both a girlfriend (but I know that the current cage isn't anywhere near big enough for two separated pairs of piggies)
option three: I could rehome one of them (un-neutered), get the other neutered and then, eventually, get him a girlfriend or two (and they could have the whole 3-storey cage to themselves)
option four: I could get them both neutered, then, when recovered, rehome one of them and get the other one a girlfriend (as above); I think that being neutered would give the 'rehomed' piggy the best chance of finding a perfect home.

It goes without saying that rehoming either of my boys would break my heart. This is one of the toughest decision I've ever had to make.............I want to do the best for my boys, but I have to think of practical issues as well.

What would you do in my circumstances? Tracey

The cages would be big enough for two pairs (male and female) I take it these cages are 120cm long? The top two cages would be big enough for a pair and the bottom cage plus c&c attachment would be big enough for another pair.
If it is indeed 120cm in length

I agree with Hanwombat - if your cage is 120cm long, then you have plenty of space for a girl for each boy!

Hi both, no, it's only 100cm long. I did originally plan to get the 120cm, but it wouldn't fit into that corner of the living room, so I ended up with the 100cm.

I think the top 2 levels would happily house Squeak and Mrs Squeak (when the time comes to do a bit of piggie dating), but I can't guarantee the number of hours Pud gets access to the run; he only has access to the run at the times we can shut the cats out of the living room, so only during the daytime Monday - Friday (when we're at work) and overnight.

We have 3 cats, one of them a kitten, and they all seem to be rather partial to a bit of piggie stalking :{ I wouldn't trust them an inch, to be honest!

Kinda sounds mad as piggies are heard animals but it seems kinda like Pudding is a bit of a loner pig...

I have had a few who prefer their own company. Maybe that's the solution for him if he stays a neighbour with squeak and his potential wife.

I am in the same situation. I have four boars and all but one get on just fine. So heartbroken that I need to find one of them a new home. Like you, I just don't have the space to keep him and find him a companion! Good luck!

100cm is a bit short for two piggies; the top two are fine for two.

Would it be possible to fashion some kind of lid for the run (aluminium rod frame with chicken mesh?), so the cats can't get at it for a couple of piggies to live in it permanently?

Hi Merrypip, yeah, I'm thinking along those lines (keep Pud alone and get a lady friend for Squeak) and see how we get on. If Pudding really doesn't get on long-term on his own, I'll have to rethink, and maybe get an second cage (:{ better not mention that to my hubby just yet!). Although I really don't want to go down that route......but if it's what I have to do to make Pudding happy, so be it.

To SnowGuru, what a shame yours don't get along........if only they knew what was best for them, eh, life would be much happier for them. :(

Hi Wiebke, yeah, 100cm is too short for two.......I know I sound awkward here (not meaning to be, honest :) ) but I made the conscious decision to keep the piggies in the living room with us, so we could interact with them and just enjoy watching them. That's why we bought the 3 storey cage they're currently in......it was spacious (good for the piggies!), but didn't take up too much floor space (good for the humans!).

I'd love to have a run extension attached to the bottom storey permanently (with some sort of 'top' on it, of course), but it just wouldn't be possible to have a set-up like that in our living room (we have very little floor space as it is).

As well as the living room, we have a dining room and 2 spare bedrooms, so we could easily move the piggies into one of those rooms, but we really wanted to have the boys in the living room with us.

I know, i know....I'm a contrary mary aren't I? LOL!
