Just had jasper out for cuddle time and his breathing seems a little strange, can see his sides going up and down and feel his heart beating. Just rang the vet, appointment at 2.15. He is eating and drinking but seems a little subdued. Fingers crossed.

Fingers firmly crossed! A diuretic will hopefully help if either the chest cavity or the lungs are fluid filled.

Don't know which vet we are seeing but needs must. I can always book him in with the regular vet next week. Just want him checking as I have had a piggie with heart problems.

Sorry to hear this Karen. You have spotted whatever it is quickly. Hope you get sorted at the vets later.

Right, back from the vets. Jasper is starting with a URI and has been given baytril. Gonna nip pets at home see if I can get probiotic. Checked Saffy as well but no problem with her so need to keep eye on her as well as jasper.

Sounds like you've caught it nice and early. Hope the ABs kick in quickly and Jasper soon feels better.

Very worried about jasper. He has had something to eat and is pooping but pets at home were out of stock of the pro c probiotic! He is laid by my side but his breathing isn't any better. Feel so helpless.

Try giving him a piece of poop from your healthy piggy as a probiotic :)

Emergency rush back to the vet, his right ear which is usually pink was blue and thought I'd lost him. Put on oxygen as soon as we arrived vet gave steroid injection. Didn't like the vet! With these small animals there is sometimes not much you can do for them......those were his words. He seems a little better now, sitting on couch with me and nibbling on some hay. He has done quite a few small poops.

Are you booked in to see your own vets tomorrow for follow up?
He has an appointment Friday but the vet I used has left. There is one guy who helped with Daisy when she was diagnosed with her heart problems. The nearest exotics vet is manchester and I wasn't happy with how they treated Daisy. There don't seem to be many specialists around. He is lying by me, had some hay but his breathing is still laboured.

Poor chap. When mine have had URTIs we have been given an injection of bricanyl (think that's how it's spelt) to open the airways as well as having antibiotics.
If you aren't keen in your new vet, have you looked to see where your old vet has moved to? Here's a link to the vets register. Not sure about other good exotics vets in Lancashire.
My vets Cheshire Pet at Holmes Chapel have 2 good exotics specialists who are good with piggies - Emily who works Mondays and Sara who covers the rest of the week.

I am wondering if his abx new changing as it's a five day course and he has had 2 days. His first dose of day 3 was this morning but he was really stressing at the syringe and that makes his breathing worse. Managed to get some down him on a basil leaf though. Such a worry and I have a 10 and half hour work day ahead of me.

This infection seems to have really got a hold on Jasper, he was back at the vets yesterday who seems to think his chest is a little better but his breathing is still labored. The vet gave him an injection of baytril and he is due back today for another. I know it's not ideal, him being injected but he struggles that much with the medicine that his breathing gets worse. Hope this works, so worried.

Poor Jasper.
Karen, have you tried giving him a bit of steam to help with his breathing? A bowl of steaming water next to (but safely not within reach of) his cage may help.

Went to bed last night, seriously expecting him to be over the rainbow bridge this morning but he is still fighting. He is moving around the cage, nibbling on cardboard tube stuffed with hay. It is really difficult knowing what the right decision is, am I being cruel?:(

RIP Jasper, devastated. Made the decision to have him put to sleep.
