Delicate problem with a boar

Not sure how to phrase this but one of my boar's has a problem with his willy. The foreskin looks all scabby & his penis seems unable to retract. We've been to the vets twice now. He's had oral antibiotics & an injection. His willy is permanently dragging on the floor - we are bathing daily with antiseptic. The vet said as a last resort we could amputate :... but wouldn't really want to (all men folk are crossing their legs at this point!).
Toby (the GP) is OK he's eating & drinking plenty. He does stay in his bed a lot - but there again he always was a timid little piggie. He does share his hutch with his brother. They are not neutered.
I'm not sure where else to go with this - another trip to the vet is planned for next week but the problem isn't resolving. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
 
i would try another vet, get a second opinion. doesnt sound quite right amputating a vital organ x
 
I'm no expert, but amputating does not sound right to me at all. Poor boy.I would look into another vet.

Thanks for all your replies - trouble is I'm in Cumbria & there's not much choice in vets in the town ie one - I won't be agreeing to anything so drastic. I'll wait & see what the vet says on wednesday.
 
Oh your poor little boy. :( I had a piggy who decided to get excited & I had the wonderful job of trying to put it back where it belongs. It isn't the nicest of jobs & I really do sympathise with you & your baby.

Amputation seems such a drastic & quite horrific option. :{:{:{ I hope you won't have to even consider it. Just keep looking after him as you obviously as you already are.

The problem you describe is quite common and easily and simply treated.
Firstly extrude his penis ie get it out and on show. Pressure at the base of the penis will push it out into the open. A normal penis is pinkish in colour, however some boars produce copious amounts of secretions which can accumulate around the shaft of the penis. This will be very obvious, the penis will be enclosed in a white "tube". If this is the case remove the secretion by holding the end of the penis with one hand, with the other hand gently remove the material. (In severe cases the material can be quite hard, with a chalk like consistency).
In some males the opening through which the penis passes can become inflamed and appear to be overgrown, almost looking like a bell with the penis in the middle. The "bell" can be inflamed. The crusty areas must be removed, they will lift off quite easily. This MUST be done to allow the gel to reach the skin underneath the crust/scab.
Treatment:
Make sure the shaft of the penis is clean.
Apply to the ouside area Daktarin Oral Gel 2 or 3 times each day for about 7-10 days.

I have never heard of such an unjustified treament as that suggested by your vet.
I would suggest he/she is best avoided. Maybe there should be a new thread devoted to "Things vets say"!!

Is he long-haired and the hair is just getting stuck on his penis to stop it retracting back? If he is living with another boar, they can get frisky and excited ... if you know what I mean.
I am sure you have considered this, but thought I would just ask.

Or could it be just that he has lots of dried semen on it to stop it going back? Have a look by pressing gently just above his penis and make the penis come out, give it a gentle wash and then dry it, then see if it goes back naturally. Hopefully it will.

I have never heard of amputating a willy ... sorry!
 
I knew forum members would be able to offer better advice! Thanks guys.

It's given me something to try. His penis seems to be unable to retract back. He's not long haired as such but has some abyssinian in him - we couldn't see any long hair trapped. Will keep on trying & see what vet suggests on wednesday - it may be the other partner there! I WON'T be going along with any suggestions about amputation.
 
I have to agree with what's been said. Amputate a penis!! :o

Is it the actual penis that's not retracting or the skin? Does his penis look anything like this

Cauliflower penis is what I was attempting to describe earlier. A picture is worth a thousand words!
Keep it clean and keep away from the so called experts.

The term c.p. is not quite anatomically correct, as it refers to the "tube" and not the penis itself. Sometimes the condition corrects itself.
 
I'm horrified by what your vet suggested, i'd like to see what he'd do if it was suggested to him :o

Poor chap! Thanks for the picture Niki, it's very useful to see what we're talking about! My Franklyn has a bit of "cauliflower penis", a mild case of it though.

Just to check, alcersterpigs (can I call you AP?), you did mean Daktarin Oral Gel, and not Daktarin cream? Just wanted to make sure I've filed the right treatment in my mind.

The active ingredient in the cream is the same as the gel. I checked with a pharmacist sometime ago what would happen if the cream were ingested by a person, probably nothing untoward was the reply. Usual thing about the cream not having a licence for oral use. I suppose it gives the manufacturers reason for 2 products instead of one!
I can't see any reason not to use the cream, after all I use it on pigs with bumble-foot and as spot-treatment on skin problems. As usual the pigs try to lick it off, none have come to any harm. Besides which, neither the gel nor the cream is licensed for use on guinea pigs!

I used to be a veterinary nurse and have never heard of 'penis amputation' :{
It sounds awful and I cant believe any vet would even suggest this.

If the penis becomes stuck with dried on semen, which does dry up extremely hard, sugar water works brilliantly. Dissolve a desert spoon of sugar in a mug of boiling water, allow to cool so that you dont scald the poor piggy and soak his affected bits in the warm water for at least 5 mins. The sugar dissolves the dried semen so that it can be washed away without hurtng the pig. Then rinse well, dry thoroughly and if needed apply just a little vaseline to help the penis back in.

Cant bear to think of a piggy without his bits :( Hope you can get him sorted soon - poor fellow.

Thanks for the pic of cauliflower penis! No, his penis doesn't look like this. His foreskin seems to have black scabs (? dead skin?) on it. I'm wondering if he's actually damaged himself some how. He's so good about having his bits washed & seems to be eating & drinking OK.

Am wondering if the "black scabs" are dried blood? if he's been over-enthusiastically cleaning himself or has had some sort of irritation that's caused him to nibble himself or possibly a fungal infection (see Alcesterpigs advice re. Daktarin Gel :) )
The fact he's eating & drinking is a good sign :)
 
Well we returned to the vets - I saw a different one! She had a good look & said there's no sign of infection. His little penis is still not able to retract properly. I'm bathing daily with hibiscrub & I've also bought some dakarin oral gel to try. It's a matter of wait & see. The worst case scenario is that there is a small tumour developing but whilst he is eating & drinking & weeing, we'll leave well alone. Will keep you all informed on progress - many thanks again for all your advice & kind words!

I think vet is clutching at straws re tumour! There is obviously something not right him. The scabby area doesn't seem to follow the pattern of ordinary crusty scabs, looks very black & is definitely not dried blood. If I can get any good pics over the weekend, I'll post them here for you to look at & give an opinion.
 
Amputation of the penis is a horrible thing for a vet to suggest.

It is possible that your lad has a prolapse of the prepuce,whichnis very rare.It is a genetic condition.The prolapse could be repaired surgically but this would need to be done by a vet who is used to operating on gp`s.
When the penis is unable to retract it will get bruised and infected.Clean it 3 times a day with a salt solution,and apply Green People baby cream or any nappy rash cream.Try and get one that does not contain parabens.The Green People salve is chemical free and is available from any health food store or from Waitrose supermarket.It is soothing,antiseptic,and will form a water proof barrier.It is safe if ingested.If you cannot get this try Kamilosan,available from any chemist and some supermarkets.This is formulated for sore nipples in women.
This condition does need to be treated quickly,and I can only suggest that you ring round and try and find a better vet.You may have to travel some way,but the prognosis without proper treatment is not good.

Delia, by "prolapse of the prepuce" do you mean what is referred to in colloquial terms as a "cauliflower penis"? If so then this is a very common condition.
