We took Daisy to our local vet last night as I suspected that her back teeth would be pinning her tongue before she sees Simon or Kim on Saturday at Cat & Rabbit Care. Helen trimmed them as she said it was close and she asked if I knew about Vedra's suggestion of braces for piggy teeth. I've never heard of it. Has anyone else or does anyone know of it being successfully tried? Helen said it was something to do with wires through the incisors

I have not heard of it either. Would be interested to know more.

Must admit I am very worried at the thought of it, my braces were bad enough when I was a teenager (including the head gear), I would have thought it would be incredibly uncomfortable for them.

I had braces as a child for a very long time (til I was about 17) I hurt like hell when they would tighten them, I cant Imagine it would encourage pigs to eatthe required amount to keep their guts moving!

I must admit it puzzled me as to how something like braces would work for a pig when they don't like constraints of any kind. I won't be trying it out on Daisy but if anyone can find out why her teeth are the way they are I'd be most grateful

I have never heard of braces, but have seen a headgear device aimed at keeping the jaw aligned and thus the teeth in proper occlusion. I looked into it for my pig, Frenzy, who had malocclusion that led to root overgrowth and a major abscess in the tooth roots, but unfortunately she passed from the infection and I never had an opportunity to try it. Look up headgear for guinea pigs and you will probably find some information.
Edited to add: here's the website I was referencing about headgear for guinea pigs and other rodents: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC339280/

I've not heard of it either! But as Vedra considers dental work to be very easy to do (I'm sure there will be many comments to the contrary), it does sound rather strange.
