Just a quick question what sort of price is teeth trimming without GA? I'm quite skint and thinking its most likely my youngest piggy is going to need his done this week and may need to ask my folks for a loan depending on how much its goign to cost.
Any replies will be appreciated :)

max cost?

Oh dear. Well I had a look in my piggies mouth and his tongue is definately not stuck although his cheeks seemed a little tender....I couldnt get a look at his bottom molars.
Any ideas of what would be a ax price for just some trimming without GA. I was hoping about £80 max.

Hi,
It might depend on what needs done.
The last pig I had done was Ebony. For her the cost was £22.46 for the consultation and £36 for the dental.
She needed her molars burred for 2 minutes (£15 per min + vat)

Total = £58.46

The first time Toffee was done (Dec 2010) her bill was £79.05 in total. Her molars were growing together threatening to trap her tongue (bigger issue than Ebony). They needed filed (?) back and probably her front teeth needed work too (not sure as previous vet had 'snipped' them rolleyes )
This included baytril, metochlopramide and recovery food (1 sachet) - some of this may have been given due to her moving and her tongue being cut in the process (not sure)...possibly a risk involved in not using GA or sedation.

Both were done without any GA or sedation. The vet did say , however, that not all pigs can be done this way .... obviously (I guess) this could affect the cost.

Toffee's first dental did then follow up with a dental abscess costing over £180 though (and over 40 min GA) plus follow ups ..... the abscess was removed and has not come back so far..... just wanted to say there can be complications.

Unfortunately I didnt get receipts for all her visits to give you an idea of a follow up dental cost which Toffee has had done (and kept her tongue out the way thankfully).

Hope this helps
x

Depends who does it for your piggy; my rodentologist does it for a donation.

Candyfloss....thats a great help....I thought absesses caused the dental problems not the other way about...3years withh piggies and I'm still a novice.
The last time I went to an ok vets in Glasgow, but they insisted on GA and paid for 4 consultations, injections and stuff before the op went ahead for what I would say uncomplicated trimming. All in all I was about £300 pounds, I hoped if I made it to apex then it would be far less expensive if its just a little trim he needs without GA. He's very good for me he lets me put my fingers in his mouth and buccal pad seperators. So hopefully with a bit of towel wrapping he'll make a successful candidate for a non GA dental.
The last time he got his teeht done at 9months old his wee cheecks were all inflammed fromt he overgrowth and really sore so hopefully it's just the same this time aroung. I use metacam but I'm not sold on it's pain relieving properties for piggies, none of my piggies have ever perked up with it.
He hasnt made nay more progress, still hiding away and onl occasionally tryign a tiny bit of veg, not touched water or pellets. Otherwise though he seems ok, his eyes are quite bright he just seems kind of depressed. I really hope it's just his teeth at least that can be fixed.

I think (and I'm no expert btw) that dental roots can cause abscesses. In Toffee's case I suspect it may have been down to her cut tongue but could be wrong. The reason I say this is she had no abscess until she had the dental work done and it appeared just after that. Also, if it had been down to a dental root I would have expected it to come back which it hasnt (and this was at the turn of the year). I could be wrong but thats my theory for what its worth. Since then she has sat better for the dentals so have not had further complications with any of them - she's maybe had 2 or 3 since then.

Toffees not the best piggy for sitting still normally so I was quite amazed that she did sit for the dental work. Sounds like your piggy will do well if he's already letting you check his teeth out. Glenn is the vet at Apex I use and he is really good with the guinea pig dentals. I always make sure I see him where teeth are concerned.

Hope it all goes well for you. Keep us posted,

xx

It cost me £72.58 for Glens dental in total.....which really pleased me and Alvin......was able to afford a few nice veggies afterwards :). £8.99 of it was fibreplex I was a bit confused as to why he needed it when he wasnt on antibiotics and I had bought prrobiotic from PAH but i never questioned it I was just so pleased it was all done without GA.
What a lovely practice at apex they all seem to really really care :). They have an open day soon also....might go and show my support x

When is the open day? We use Apex vet's to along with CandyFloss. Glen is a fab vet although I'd like to see less of him! :))

He has did some of my pigs teeth to :).

I think it's the 6th of August but don't quote me on it. Iv'e got a little 15 weeks old border terrier puppy, I am thinking of changing her vet too :).
Ive just seen him out his hidey hole and eating pellets and up saying hello to Thep through the bars......what a result I am SO pleased. I have paid up to £300's before on theo to get a diagnnose of mouth problems.
Think I will go to the open day, hope to see all fello piggie lovers there....I'll be the one with the mega curly hair he he.

:)).. I might go if CandyFloss is going (Hint, Hint) ;) :)), then again I'm there enough as it is LOL.

Glad he could help your pig - All my pigs go to Glen he's a brilliant piggy vet! x

Glad it went well for you at Apex vets - Glenn's a really great vet at the piggy dentals (and no doubt a great vet in general). He's always willing to go and find out more about things too which a lot of vets dont bother with when it comes to guinea pigs.

Good he's eating already. Toffee and Ebony were eating straight after their dentals although I was warned it could take a day or 3 and to syringe feed if they werent eating (but they were).

xx

Ive reduced the syringing but he's getting better by the hour...think he just needed some time hiding back at home but he's doing really well now. I'll keep checking his weight though :).
So appreciative of the recommendation, he def knew his stuff :) x

That's great news! xx>>>

Yayyyy.... good news ..... glad its all gone well and he's improving all the time.

My Toffee looks like a completely different pig now to when she started going to see Glenn as a bulging eyed piggy of less than 500g..... and now she looks less like a mouse and more like a piggy at 800g....

xx

I didn't think a piggy would still be alive at less than 500g, did you rescue her? Ive been to a rescue called thistle cavvies, gave up my two little girlies as after spenign £600 on my two boys in 6months I just couldnt afford them all and the vet bills. Wendi from thistle cavies had a lovely set up...I wanted to rescue them all.
By the by, what was the cause of the buldging eye? Ive seen it before but never got a proper diagnosis, I suspected it was teeth related too though as it went down after the dental.
I know it's justt brilliant he's even trying to bully his cage mate now over food......HAPPY piggies mummy.

Toffee was one of 3 girls in PAH Adoption area last October. She was the smallest of the 3 when I got them - the other 2 grew and she didnt.... she never lost weight initially so it wasnt obvious there was a problem - she just never put weight on..... then I saw her looong front teeth and went to the vets..... turned out her back teeth were about to trap her tongue growing across it.
Never found out the cause of the bulging eye but as her teeth started to improve and she put on weight the bulging went... Her teeth initially looked like they were really bad quality (rough) but are improving all the time. We initially thought she would need dentals every few weeks but she has improved so much so quickly with Glenns help that she no longer needs regular dentals (but still may need them done in the future).
She's a little fighter, loves life and is fast as a rocket :))

I have never had it done to my guinea pigs. Where do you live? Like what currency do you use?
