Hello piggie friends

Wonder if anyone can help. I have a beautiful three year old piggie called Ted. I noticed he has recently been gradually losing weight. He was always a lot heavier than his brother 1350 gm but then they weighed the same 1250 gm. I also noticed he seemed slower at eating and swallowing seem a problem, seemed to gag at times, but otherwise generally well.

Took him to local vet (west Cornwall area), and Ted was sedated and had teeth filed under GA. He lost 100gms despite Critial Care and hand feeding. DId not seem capable of picking up anything with his front teeth. His OP was 23/6/18, I am still giving him Crital Care 4 times a day, about 40ml over 24 hours. He is now chewing and starting to bite and tare good now, but seems to need prompting with hand feeding, his weight now is 1120 gm so not putting back weight on but it is stable ish!

Would like to get second opinion on teeth but can't find any cavy savy. Vets in Cornwall? Does anyone know of any, will travel south west area, ideally one that will look into his mouth without sedation, with special mouth forceps etc? My vets were ok but not cavy savy, I think incisors were cut too short?

Have heard of SImon Maddox, but is there any hotels inNorthampton that would take Guinea X 2, not sure how long I could stay, elderly mother and g children to look after.

KInd regards

Jane, Bill & Ted

@furryfriends (TEAS) runs a sanctuary in Northampton for guinea pigs with dental issues. You could always give her a ring. You can find her on Facebook (The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary for guinea pigs with extra needs) and see if she could board your piggies for you.

I can’t copy and paste on my phone but here are her details

Thank you I will look her up, I am not confident he would manage eating on his own without hand feeding and critical care and not sure if his teeth should be back to normal yet, or if this is just a case of getting your teeth worn in?

I’m not sure to be honest. I’ve only ever had one piggy with dental issues and we sadly lost him :(

I’m sure someone with more experience will be along shortly but I strongly recommend you contact Debbie as I know that she has bordered poorly piggies in the past when their owners have lived miles away from the sanctuary and the cat and rabbit clinic

Unfortunately, furryfriends is currently not around.

Please follow the tips oin our syringe feeding guide; we have a section for guinea pigs with dental issues. The illustrated step-by-step guide has been written specially for owners with no experience. Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

I arrived back from holiday last night. If you could get your guinea pig seen by Simon this week, then I could have them here for a few weeks. Simon is only available until Thursday, as he starts annual leave on Friday, so you would need to get an appointment before he goes. If you would like to call me, let me know and I will give you my number.

Hello Teas

THank you so much for the kind offer of help, unfortunately I have grandchildren to collect from school this coming week, they don't break up until Friday and there is no one else to have them. Do you know how long Simon is on holiday for? I may be able to get up later in August. Ted has eaten well this morning, chewing through carrot top stalks which is a first, I think he is improving a little each day now, just concerned I am doing right thing with CC and hand feeding, didn't realise he would take so long for his teeth to wear in.

Many thanks again

Jane

Hi Jane, he is off until Monday, 30th July. I would only be available until 10th August, as I am taking time off then, to spend with my family and take the grandchildren away for a few days, but we could hopefully sort something before then. Simon is off again from 18th August until Thursday, 30th August, but not sure if he is back in work on the Friday, as I only have the days I am looking after his pets, in my diary.

hello tees

Thank you for those dates. I will try and get something sorted around beginning of August and will let you know ASAP. I Really appreciate your kindness and help, in mean times I'll concentrate on getting him eating and keeping well.

Thank you for info regarding Simon, will be in touch

Jane

Hello Teas

Looked at all the dates and we can come up on Sunday 29th July, realised my Mum has hospital appointment for 26th (she's 89) so can't cancel it. I am going to ring vets and hook an appointment for Monday 30th and take it from there. So could I take up your kind offer for the Bill and Ted for a few days (depending upon what he thinks) Will probably stay in Northampton Sunday night if we can find pet friendly hotel, then see what vet says.

Will give you call early next week once booked appointment

Best wishes
Jane

Yes that’s fine. If you can't find a pet friendly hotel, you can drop the boys here on the Sunday and I can meet you at the vets with them on the Monday.

Hello

That's great will be in touch when I get appointment sorted on Monday, many thanks

Hello Teas

Got Ted booked in for an appointment on 30th July at 10.10am with Simon Maddox at Limehurst Square (cat and Rabbit practice, my vets have emailed over Ted's medical records this morning so that's great. Booked local Campeline Hotel just below Northampton off M1 junction 15 so only 5 miles away for Sunday night. They will take pets so should not be a problem for Sunday night (but you never know, so can I let you know if there's a problem with them accepting Guinea pigs for the night! ALthough they are better behaved than dogs generally! Hoping to get there mid afternoon.

Ted eating quite well at moment, definite improvement.

Tried to call this morning at Teas number but know you will be very busy, will give you a call later on

Very best wishes

Jane

Thank you WIebke

Have looked at guide and I doing everything correctly, fingers crossed he will get sorted with SImon x

Hi Piggie Friends

Thank you all for the lovely messages of support, Ted has put on weight yesterday and is continuing to eat like a pig! Here he is with his brother Bill at the food bowl looking a lot perkier than a few days ago! X
