Hi

One of my boars, Monty is 18 months old and over the last week I have noticed that he is really excited at food time but then just runs around and doesn't really eat. He has also lost a bit of weight.

Well, I took him to the vets today and as I suspected he has a dental problem, his front teeth aren't too bad but apparently the back left had side is a bit sore.

The vet has given him a pain killer injection and a gut stimulant and filed his front bottom teeth down slightly and he is booked in on Monder to have his back teeth sorted out under GA.

The vet implied that this would possibly be an ongoing requirement.

I just wondered if anyone else had gone through this or is going through it and could offer reassurance.

Thanks
Jo

Sorry, I can't help you as I have never had tooth trouble.

However, I know that GA is NOT necessary for tooth filing.

Whereabouts do you live, so you could enquire about a rodentologist near(ish) to you?

Thank you for your reply - we are near Chipping Campden on the Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire border! About 20 minutes from Stratford upon Avon - 10 minutes from Evesham

Hi there,
Sorry to hear about your piggy :( One of my piggies Poppy has to have dental treatment every couple of months - this is done by a local rodentologist who has the knowledge, expertise and equipment to do this without GA. It would definately be worth your while contacting your nearest one, especially if it is maybe an ongoing problem :) Google the British Association of Rodentologists and see if you can find a contact :) I know I would be lost without a rodentologist, they are a god send :)

I have just left a message for a rodentologist in <info blanked out at members request>, I got his number from the BAR, so hopefully he will be in touch soon.

Please can I ask what I should expect to pay for a dental for Poppy and do they normally do it while you wait? I don't want him to have a GA if I can avoid it.

Thanks

I am extremely lucky and my Rodentologist does not charge me for worming or dental treatment :) she does it out of the goodness of her heart, however, I give her gifts such as flowers, chocolates etc cos I think she ought to have something for her time. I don't know how other rodentologists operate, all I can say though - if they do charge it would be a damn site cheaper that paying for treatment, meds and a GA at your vets and obviously a heck of a lot safer.
I stay with Poppy and help hold her as she is a strong madam for a five year old and manages to get out of her towel wrap :) It takes around half an hour to file Poppy's teeth cos she hates it and the rodentologist is very patient and files a bit then lets her have a rest etc :)

Thanks for the reply - just reread my previous messages - my head is in the clouds today, I am on here when I should be working! rolleyes

Anyway, glad you worked out what I meant!

Poppy sounds like a piggy with personality! x)

I will let you know how we get on.

You have had some great advice, all the same as I would have said so I've little to add. I am really pleased you have found a local rodentologist, I hope he can sort Monty out for you. You will be surprised at just how quick and simple the dental work will be. A procedure which the vets turn into an all-day performance with anesthetics costing a lot of money actually only takes a few short minutes without any sedation and a very low price (if any) with a rodentologist.

Best of luck, do keep us updated. Is Monty eating hay and dry food? Is he being syringe-fed at all?

If you are going to the forum member I think it is you piggie will be looked after, I suspect it is the one where all my piggies go :)):)):))

Update

Well Monty went for his dental work on Friday and I am very very grateful to the person that we saw and cannot thank them enough.

I only wish that we had gone there before we went to the vet as his front teeth were filed down unnecessarily.

Monty has started eating again - both veg, hay and his pellets and has gained a little bit of his lost weight back.

I know that he may need more work on his teeth in the future but now I know where to go!

Excellent update, I am pleased you have found someone so helpful nearby, and that Monty is doing so well!
