Long time no speak. My little Dudley has just turned 2.

He stopped eating yesterday. Left him in the hands of Taverham vets. They are pretty sure it is dental.

His bottom back teeth appear to be crossing over. He is having an anathstetic this afternoon. Fingers crossed that is all it is

I hope so. They can't be certain but that is what it looks like

Unfortunately it is very bad news.

They discovered that he had some serious dental issues. To the point that they believe his Jaw was fractured in several places and was infact crumbling away. She said it was very lose.

They said they could try and file his teeth down and give him a course of antibiotics but ultimately his jaw isn't going to recover.

I have had to have him put to sleep. I hope it is the right thing. I just don't know

Oh, I am so sorry for you x It’s a difficult decision but one made from love for your piggie, so sorry x
Sleep tight Dudley x

I am left wondering if I should of got him to Simon
From what you have said I think you made the right choice. Sometimes no matter what we try we won’t be able to save them and think of the fact your little one is no longer in pain. Things like this are so hard to call but with the issue being the jaw rather than the teeth I think you have made the correct choice, I would have done the same. I am so sorry, please be extra kind to yourself x

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry! You have made the right decision to spare him a lot of struggle and pain during the last days or weeks of his life.

It is perfectly normal that you have strong self-doubts after having had to make such a vital decision without being able to digest it all and think it through. It is always taking some time for the heart to catch up with the head. Feelings of failure, guilt and self-examination are typical for the onset of the grieving process but depending on the circumstances they can be much stronger.

Please take consolation that your have given Dudley a happy life filled with love and care. Guinea pigs don't have a concept for a long life expectancy; they measure their lives by the happy todays they experience. You have given Dudley many happy todays in your good care and you have spared him all the unhappy todays he would have had to struggle through just for the sake of living a little longer. A life is never measured in how long it is but in how filled with happiness and love it has been. ;)

You can never choose how long for you have a beloved pet and what it is ultimately dying from; we have them only ever on loan from above on a contract that can be cancelled anytime. You have brought meaning to Dudley's life and have made it worthwile to live. That is the greatest gift you can make another being.
Not putting any beloved pet through any suffering when the prognosis is bad is the most loving but also the most heart-breaking decision and gift we can make. You heart is in the right place; but give it and your head time to digest the shock and deal with the loss. ;)

Huge hugs. I have commented on your other thread. Please go gently with yourself as you grieve.
