dental problem

maybe i feel so sorry for him , i hope he is not in pain =[ it wound break my heart .
do you think that he will continue to eat or maybe there is another problem? i just don't want jimmy to suffer:...
 
hes off his pain meds now so just antibiotic
my vet said it very strange and that he should be eating
do you believe its just a matter of time?
 
i dont understand why he is on antibiotics? still.

have you tried putting mushed pellets into a bowl and seeing if he can lap it up?

it can take along time for dental or unwell pigs to eat on there own but the longer he is on syringe.feeds the more he may need his teeth re doing .

it sounds to me your vet isnt very experanced with dental pigs or she would know the teeth dont grow into eye sockets unlike a chinchilla the teeth of a guinea pig grow over the tongue and trap the tongue which makes them unable to eat they also grow into the tongue and into the cheeks, you really need find another exotic vet so ring around

when mushing the pellets pour boiling water on them wait 15mins add more water then mix wait for it cool and give x

ps also add probiotics and vit c to the pellets too
 
she seems very experienced, really do the roots not grow up?
he is on antibiotic because of the mouth ulcers but they are gone but i guess he has to finish the course? he really doesn't want to eat only the very odd time he will nibble on a little cucumber and i mean a little,
do you have any advice on how to help him on!?x
 
they can haveroot problems but ive never heard of them growing into their eye sockets give me your email address and i will give you s numberfor my rodentoligist he will give your brill advice on what to do
he was a human dentist for 30yr and guinea dentist for 20yr xx
 
vet can also give you oral gut stimulant (metocloprimide) at a dose of0.5ml-1ml 3 times aday until he is eating onhis own still give syringe feeds too x
 
He has been gettin gut stym all week since he gone the teeth done from the vet every mornin,
From tomoro on he is only gettin antibiotics orally and fibroplex, I'm still syringing cc and pellets x
He always layin down or sleep is this normal for his state
Ive just noticed his front to feet hav scabs on them not swollen poor baby, people probly think I'm not lookin after him, my poor piggie x
 
its normal with dental pigs to sleep alot as they are weak and feel ill,

regarding the scabs are they defo scabs?
also what do his poops look like are they like a pair drop shape with a point/tail on the end?
 
No poos in two day as he not eating soilds, so it gooy and soft
And he has impaction so i hav to do it for him x
Yeah they defo scabs, I'm puttin cream on him hopfully will heal up
Ive givin him. 05ml of apple juice today and yesterday for vit c x
 
get some vit.c tablets for humans only vit.c and add half a tablet to a bottle (his water bottle) and syringe feed him this when giving him his fluids yoj wont need the apple jucie then, ask the vet to give you oral gut stimulants as he really needs this until he is eating, he shouldnt really need antibiotics now as this can mess their gut up, keep going with syringe feeding and getting the poops through him, also get some probiotics from vet and give him this too in his water x
 
By the end of this my pig is goina hate me with all the cc and pellet i forcing onnhim :-(
Still no eating. ..........
 
Ok, the poor lil guy just wants to sleep,
He was tryin to eat cucumber but he was just mouthin it :-(

Have you tried poking blades of grass into the side of the mouth to the back teeth. Or bits of soft lettuce, dandilion leaves or spinach leaves rolled into little cigar shapes poked in? Try cutting little pieces of his favourite veggies into various shapes like matchstick shape or grating them.
Bucket loads of perserverence and patience needed !
 
I never tried to put a piece of soild food in his mouth incase he chokes!
My poor pig i feel sorry, I'm startin toask myself am i prolonging is pain?:...

Make it a long thin piece of food like grass; that way you can pull it out if he can't manage.
Just remembered that both my dental pigs would eat unusual foods like banana and wholemeal bread when they could eat nothing else!
I also used to cut cucumber into matchsticks and put them in milly's mouth and she would be able to eat the "jelly" bit off the end, then gradually (over several days) the whole matchstick.

How long did it take for your pigs to start eating again?
 
Different every time, it can take a few days, weeks or even months. It really depends on whether it is simple overgrown teeth or a more complex problem. It is wonderful when they do start eating again though!
 
I know it seems a long time but as I understand it, it only a week since his teeth were filed; early days yet. I suggest you speak to furryfriends as she has more experience.
Don't lose heart!

I have a guinea pig who has had 3 dentals now. Each time he has taken around a month to get back to eating hay and pellets. After syringe feeding for about 2 weeks he starts to try and eat mint (his favourite) and then other soft salad leaves but it's a slow process. I also give him small bits of weetabix which he adores to try and encourage his eating. Around 4 weeks after his dental he starts to eat his hay and pellets and the last thing for him to achieve is always using his water bottle again.

Also the first time he had his teeth done he developed bumblefoot (scabs on his feet). The vet gave me fuciderm gel for them.

I don't normally post on the forum, I just tend to lurk, but I just wanted to give you some encouragement to keep going with your piggy. Soon he will be back to his happy self :)
