Over the last few months my guinea pig has had 3 dental surgeries (originally to remove spurs from his back teeth) but nothing has helped. He can still only manage critical care and apple puree from a spoon. He was eating oats but now he has stopped that too and drinking from the bottle. He desperately wants to eat and stands at the bars for critical care but is losing weight and is down to low 700s.

He had a check up yesterday and his bottom teeth have now grown very long from not eating properly for so long and the vet could also see some blood in his mouth. He is now on metacam and I will syringe him food if he doesn't get enough willingly.

The vet suggested a referral to a vet school in Edinburgh but isn't sure if they can do anything more either, and it is also a long way away. I have heard about a guinea pig dentist called Simon Maddock but my Dad said that is too far as well, so I am not sure what to do now.

Another vet I recommend is Glen in Falkirk, where are you based?

Glen has dealt with my Fred and Milo both needed dental's. He has done numerous other piggies I know to.

Simon is hugely recommended as is Debbie for her expert care. It's just unfortunate he's on holiday as Debbie advised above.

Would your little pig would be Ok for 10 days? Could your vet do anything in the meantime to help with his teeth? I'm guessing your vet is out of ideas which is why he's suggesting a referral.

As you are in Yorkshire, it might be worth ringing Milhaven Guinea Pig Recsue at Keighley and seeing if she can suggest a specialist in the Leeds / West Yorks area? Jo who runs the rescue is very knowledgeable and would try to advise I am sure. Just a thought as Simon M is not available at the mo and you could get there more easily?
