Our Scruffy was making those funny sloppy noises that they do when they get something stuck in their teeth last week - we gave him some water to try and flush it out, however it continued and the next day and he seemed to have difficulty biting and chewing - when he didn't want his timothy hay I knew something was wrong so we took him to the vets. He had a check-up, there was a lot of stuck food but the vet said she wouldn't be able to have a proper look unless he had anaesthetic, but before she went down that route she said she would try some pain relief, see if he gets back into eating hay and the grinding action would grind down any spurs that had been troubling him. She also gave him some antibiotics in case he had an infection.
Anyway he seems to be back to normal, in fact as soon as we got him back from the vets he seemed better, so I thought this might be useful for people to read and maybe discuss with their vets. I am just so relieved he didn't need an anaesthetic as he is only a little fella.
The vet did say that we had spotted it early, which I think helped as well, before it got too bad.

Your pig has had a lucky escape.
I can type this quite quickly these days because I have written it so many times:
There is no need whatsoever to give a gp a general anaesthetic to either look at, or to trim, it's teeth.
