A collegue at work has told me her boar's front teeth are growing really strangely. She describes it as if two sets of teeth at the top have fused together. (I took this to mean his top front teeth have become really thick) He's still eating and seems fine in himself but she says he's changed his eating preferences and wont eat some foods that he did eat. I've suggested she weigh him regularly and asked her for photos. He has had dental treatment in the past but not for anything like this. I've advised her to take him to the vets but wondered if anyone had come across anything like this before?

I've seen the thickened teeth before - one pig needed it filed regularly to keep it under control as it didn't wear down enough on it's own. Another had a back tooth that was thickened but this was due to root impaction and changes in his jaw. He was PTS no long afterwards as the treatment was not able to deal with the jaw problems.

I read about this somewhere. Agree with Suzy, some piggies just don't wear their teeth down quickly enough or they have teeth that grow unusually quickly.

I would say that one solution may be to try different wooden things to chew. I know apple tree twigs are quite tasty - something to encourage chewing with the front teeth...
