Sergio is still recovering from a dental operation he had about 2 weeks ago. He's been on Baytril for 17 days now (0,4ml. twice a day). Is it too much? Could this be keeping him from gaining weight, losing his apetite and even making him lose weight? At some point he had started eating hay and veggies on his own but he stopped again.

He even shows signs of URI the last couple of days... How could this be possible since he's been on Baytril for so long? Could it just be a cold and not URI? (The only symptoms are sneezing, runny and blocked nose. Loss of apetite and loss of weight could be because of the dental op he had or Baytril or URI, I can't be sure about that. :( )

Sorry for asking so many questions, but it's too much for him to have URI while recovering from dental work (including GA) and while being on such heavy medication... :(

Hello, what age is Sergio? There are so many things it could possibly be, you would need to take him back to the vet. Has he had any runny poos or anything like that?
Could it be possible his teeth haven't been filed properly? I know Thumper sneezed a lot and his nose and eyes were runny when his teeth were bad. You really need to speak to a vet as he's losing weight and not eating. Good luck xox

Hello!

Sergio is 2,5 years old.

I called the vet today cause he's lost a lot of weight in only 2 days, Ι was so worried!

The vet said that it can't be URI since he's already on Baytril, so it's very likely that the problem is his teeth again... She said that maybe the front teeth have grown big again and their roots have reached the nasal cavity (just like the roots of the molars had reached the eye cavity). She also said that this is the only way to explain all the new symptoms. We're going to see the vet tomorrow and see what we can do about it. :(

Oh no, it does sound likely that it is dental rather than an infection. Also if they don't start eating themselves fairly quickly the teeth can overgrow again mallethead Can you try syringing him watered down pellets, and some of his favourite foods pureed? Is he drinking water, if not try to get some water syringed in too. I don't know if you have syringed before, but if not, it's important to syringe into the side of his mouth, not towards his throat as piggies can easily inhale the fluid into their lungs, so just place the syringe in the side and very slowly push the plunger, little bit at a time and wait until he has chewed and swallowed. If you don't have a syringe you could try spooning it in. It's important that he gets some food to keep his guts moving. Try not to panic too much, you're doing a great job and if you can do the above that will really help him until he gets to the vets tomorrow. Let us know how you and Sergio get on xox

Thanks so much for everything! I've been syringe-feeding him for almost a month now! So both me and Sergio are now very good at syringe-feeding/eating!

The thing is, I just noticed that the fluid coming out of his nose must be pus! His bulging eye is not so bulging anymore (it looks really gooood now!), so maybe the pus coming out of his nose, is from the abscess he had behind the previously bulging eye!

Hmmm... What do you think..? But how can all that be connected to loss of apetite and weight? pfff... getting more and more confused and looking forward to going to the vet!

I wonder if his dental problems are causing him pain, that's enough to put a piggy right of his food, poor thing, he's really going through it isn't he, he's very lucky to have you. I hope your vet is able to get to the bottom of it so wee Sergio can get back to himself soon! It must be so frustrating for you, and it's hard work syringe feeding, and you've been doing it for a month, I only had to do it for a week and it was very up and down! xox

omg sergio has had it bad, i really feel for you, its never ending, sending you MORE vibes for the little one x

What was wrong with Sergio's teeth? I read your reply in my thread I didn't realize Sergio also has abscess, was his teeth problem previous to the abscess?

I hope he gets better soon! it seems he might have catch some chest infection probably because he has been sick for a while and I think, just like in humans when you are not well for a while you get more vulnerable to all kind of infections.
I can't give much advice as I don't have that much experience with guinea pigs but if you are already giving him antibiotics and hand feeding him I guess all is left for you to do is to try to make him the most comfortable possible which I'm sure you are doing.
My guinea pig Rens who also has abscess and respiratory problems seems to have improved with the antibiotics and keeping him warm, so maybe if place have a hot water bottle on Sergio's cage and cover the walls of the cage over that part of the cage with a towel so that he is not exposed to any current of air he might get better!

Best wishes for Sergio!
