Can anyone help with dental issues. My piggie nearly 2 went to the vets not eating and was treated for possible bloating . However still not recovering today she had xrays and sedated to check her teeth. Seems the back molars are growing crooked and causing her pain. I think they are growing into her gums. Anyway vet said he filed a tiny bit but didn't want her under too long so needs to do more next week. I have her home but she's very very scared. Squeals when I pick her up.. never done that before... could that just be that she s been messed about and thinks it's happening all over again. Bless her. She s been on zantac and metacam which I'm still giving and critical care which I'm to carry on with. Will she start to calm down again. The vet said it was hereditary bad teeth and if they couldn't sort be best to take them out? So a diet of liquid ... this shocked me. Is this a poss? I try and save each month for vet issues... but cannot afford huge dental bills as much as I love my guinea . I've lost my job and have a family to feed with a very sick husband. This is all in the future... but is worrying me so much.

None of this sounds right. How experienced is your vet with guinea pig dental issues? Where about do you live? Taking the teeth out and feeding a liquid diet is a ridiculous idea. If you get the crowns of the teeth right, the guinea pig will eat just fine. Here at TEAS, we have a number of guinea pigs, with dental issues, in our care and all can eat well. The vet we use, Simon Maddock, carries out dental treatment, without the need for GA, and people travel the length and breadth of the country to see him.

Hi... the vets assistant passed this info onto me at pick up so when I go back wed to have a bit more filed off I will question what she's said. I havnt asked to be honest regards expertise.. I thought it was pellets stuck at the back of her teeth when I took her in. It was after I found this out. I live in Widnes Cheshire near Warrington. She still doesn't seem to be eating... she wolf's the critical care.. can't get enough of it. She won't go near the hay. Don't know how to tempt her back into chewing. She also seems very quiet. Could that just be the trauma s of yesterday ?

When the guinea fails to start eating, it’s usually because the teeth haven’t been filed correctly. You have to get them exactly right to get success and most vets haven’t got that expertise. Also dental issues are rarely cured with one dental. The fact that Simon can carry out the dental work without GA means he can tidy up the teeth again before they start to cause an issue, which increases a very successful outcome. So often we get piggies signed over to TEAS after owners have spent many hundreds or thousands of pounds at other vets and the guinea pig starts to eat after just one dental by Simon.

I'm in a really bad place at the moment... time wise we are due to go on a family holiday a week in 9 days before my husband's starts his chemo again.. I can't expect my neighbour to syringe feed her while I'm away... I have found a specialist vet for just cats rabbits and guineas about 20 miles away so have emailed if they specialise in dental work... but time us against me totally here and I can see the holiday to Florida being cancelled and our money lost. Its all very stressful at the best if times when your guinea is poorly. Will see what this vet says.

As well as running TEAS I have a pet boarding business. I know you would still have the problem of getting your piggy here, but it is an option for you and would mean we could get Simon to see her while she's here. xx

Thank you so much for that. The issue here is the distance. I would think that if Simon works his magic ... I would still be returning every couple of weeks would I to keep the teeth down? That's just not an option with my husband in the state he us with treatment and hospital appointments . I'm still holding onto that tiny bit if a miracle come wed when she goes again that he gets it right. I have emailed a vet in Stockport that specialises in guineas and smaller animals ... they have taken digs off their books to concentrate on the smaller pets. She loves the recovery food.. cannot get enough.. tugs at the syringe when I try and move it.. I don't even have to lift her up she comes to me. She s trying to eat the veg but you can see that She s using her front teeth and moves her head funny when something gets stuck at the back that she can't grind. Pray for a little bit if good luck and see

It could initially be frequent but often the time between appointments opens up until they only go every few months or completely cure. It is important to keep to the time schedule with appointments though, so if it’s going to be difficult to do that, then you may need to try and find someone more local. Will keep everything crossed for your little lady xx

Thank you again. She is the greediest piggie I know which can only be a good thing... She s tried so hard to eat.. and has just had some critical care which seems to make her want more.. She s tried to chew a piece of hay which I havnt seen yet. All going in the right direction but time isn't on my side regards to getting away. Thanks again. Hope you don't mind if I post after wed with an update

Well went back to the vets... she s trying so so hard to eat but just can't chew. I spoke direct to the vet n he said he would never resort to taking her teeth out. Relief so it hadn't come from him in my earlier post. He said her top molar is growing at a slant out rubbing on her cheek and the bottom growing in rubbing on her tongue so they arnt meeting much to grind. He would do what he could . Picked her up and she s bounced back even quicker than last week. Some metacam and zantac and a bit of critical care which she wolf's down... and she s already trying to chew the hay and have a good go at a cucumber! Early days but I can't believe how quick she s trying to eat already. He's reduced her metacam to 0.1 instead of 0.2 x1 per day and to go back in a week. Is there anything I should keep my eye on or ask about? Thanks especially @furryfriends (TEAS) for all your help
