Hi everyone,

I’m looking after my friends guinea pig while she is on holiday. I’ve kept Guinea pigs for over 30 years and have 3 of my own currently.

I’ve been through all the usual things with vets etc and even was a member of the CCT for a while - and also seen Barry and Shirley Yallop before with past piggies (are they even still around?)

Anyway, my piggies have been reasonably problem free for some time and the last time I went to my vets I’d been using regularly, they weren’t that great.

So last week, before my friend went away, her piggy Frodo had to have his back teeth seen to by their vet. It was done under GA and he hasn’t really improved now almost 10 days after.

He will take softened pellets and is hungry for them, but if you place veggies in his mouth he can seem to chew on them and will not take hay or grass.

I think the teeth have not been done properly at the back.

I’m asking to see if anyone knows which vets are good with guinea pig dentistry in Suffolk. It wouldn’t be beyond me to take the trip all the way to Northampton if it was one of my piggies but realistically my friend is not going to travel there regularly, so we need to try and resolve the issue locally as it looks like he will need regular trims.

His incisors do not align properly first of all and his jaw may be a little slack or the back teeth too long which is not allowing him to close his mouth properly. I’ve had a feel around his jaw area and ears and tried giving a little massage while feeding him, but it’s only been 1 day.

He’s on 0.45ml of Loxicom a day - I’m going to try this as two doses tomorrow, it’s the 1.5 dog one.

He dropped a few grams yesterday but has eaten soft pellets better today as I made more available to him and gave him dedicated feeds. But still no luck with hay or any veggies - I cut up some red pepper which he loves but he almost choked on it and he eventually spat it out (when I tried to take it out he bit it!). When I picked him up for his evening feed his tummy felt fuller than this morning when he felt a little light.

We can try and hold out for 6 more days until my friend returns but I don’t think this is going to resolve so any vet recommendations in Suffolk or Essex would be helpful of vets to can do good dentistry (preferably conscious)

Thanks!

The Beaumont Sainsbury's Animal Hospital Exotics Department is good. It's in Camden but close to the stations and Kings Cross. It's walkable from King's Cross. It's a big teaching hospital so I'm sure they do dental work on guinea pigs.

Giving this a bump - still looking for a dentistry savvy vet in Suffolk or surrounding area

I can't comment about dental specifically but I use Suffolk exotic vet, it's on the list. They definitely know about guinea pigs. They diagnosed Dignified Sir George with sterile cystitis and even suggested the 4 joints for glucosamine.

I don't think we have many members in Suffolk so you may not get any help. It's probably best to ring round some recommended vets and ask what their dental experience is.
Thanks, I will do - I’m trying to avoid another ‘not quite getting the job done but charges a lot of money’ job, so was looking for a recommendation based on experience.

Thanks, I’d seen them on the list and oooked on their website, my plan was to call them on Monday if Frodo was not improving.

Ok here’s an update in case anyone else is looking for similar information.

Frodo has improved slightly, eating a very small amount of hay (like 1 piece!) and a small amount of red pepper. His gripping and tearing is improving.

This morning he ate some softened pellets and a little bit of fresh grass. I’ve been putting him near my guinea pigs to encourage him as he is a single pig. He enjoyed being near my girls (not too near ha ha) and now he is having a nibble on some readigrass which has just arrived from Amazon.

Also have seen him relaxing on his side, so a good indicator that pain is minimal/controlled.

If he’s still not making much progress by Monday then I plan to call Suffolk Exotic Vets in Beccles and see if they can book him in for further investigation.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Update 2:

Didn’t have such a good day today, at least not the start anyway. He may have tried to eat too many ‘hard’ things overnight which set him back a bit.

Wasn’t interested in food this morning, but he had gained weight.

I had to leave him most of the day so I gave him painkillers and a fresh bowl of soaked pellets. Took a pic of the full bowl and got my partner to text me a pic of the bowl when he got home - half was eaten. When I eventually got home, it was all gone.

Later this evening he had 2 small bowls of soaked pellets. I keep a small gerbil food dish for this, it works well as the have to push the mushy pellets around

We're taking our girl to the Suffolk Exotic Vets on Friday with a dental issue (they're linked with our normal vets). Her top front teeth seem to have overgrown and she can't bite through things.

With regards to food etc, we're having success with a mix of mushed pellets, critical care and Emeraid. I leave four piles out on a plate, one of each, and one with all three mixed together. We're lucky that she's able to eat mushed stuff independently. We've only lost 8 grams since Friday with this method so it's working at maintaining her weight.

She was getting bored of just one at a time so this means she always has something she wants to eat.

I can report back on Friday as to how that vets are with dental things. Fingers crossed because they're on the list, they have some experience with dental work.

I sadly cannot comment on their dental abilities as we made the difficult decision to have our girl put to sleep.

Her tongue was starting to get pinned and everything was overgrown and needed substantial work, with no guarantee of success. We lost her sister last year in the same way so we're putting it down to genetics. I don't know if we're making the right decision, but we don't want to risk any suffering. It wouldn't be long until her front teeth would start to dig into her mouth so it was a case of do the dental or PTS.

Cost wise a dental was estimated at around £500-£600, x-rays and a CT scan were to be another couple of hundred each. Cost was a factor in our decision, especially as it's unlikely to be a one and done.

They are very knowledgeable and I would trust them for more serious work in the future where my local vets can't help.

At least she's now with her sister 🌈
