So About 6-7 years ago I saved two guinea pigs from my neighbour. They where father and son approx 1 year and 6 weeks old. They have happily lived outdoors together this whole time but a few days ago I had to get the father put down (suspected cancer) and the son went into depression (wouldn't eat, talk or move around) and lost a lot of weight. Iv brought an indoor cage for him and now his indoors so I can monitor him and keep him out of the cold as now he no longer has a friend to cuddle and I'm not in the situation to get another friend for him :(
Last night he started eating again but he will only eat fresh veggies not hay or pellets etc so I was Just wondering is it's ok to feed him a lot of veggies? (Several cups a day?) I don't want to give him runny stools or make him Sick but I want to start putting the weight back on him. Any advice is appreciated and he started talking to me again today :D so his slowly getting better :)

Hello and welcome to the forum,

Jut veggies unfortunately isnt great, if he starts to eat hay in the next day i wouldn't panic however i really would suggest at the very least you get some critical care formula from the vets, I'm not sure if pet shops will actually sell this. It is a liquid tasty formula which is full of fiber which is what your piggie needs. Veggies wont contain enough fiber really. How long did he not eat for? Any piggie not eating for about 12 or more hours is an emergency as lots of complications can happen. I would suggest if he doesn't start eating fiber soon to go for a vet check up as he sounds like an elderly man and it wouldn't harm him to have a check over. This does sound like a case of grieving too though.

Good luck.

My girl is grieving too and although she is eating some hay & pellets it's not enough. I've been tempting her with hay by giving it to her right after a small piece of veg. And I sit right by her cage indoors while she's eating - she seems happier to do stuff when one of us is close by. Critical care is a good shout as well - we bought it online think amazon. Good luck with him! X

He stopped eating for about two days just nibbling in things here and there (mainly veg for the next few) but slowly his picked up and now I'm happy to say his back to his normal self chatting and wanting attention and smashing through anything I place in his cage :) safe to say I think he enjoys his new life as an indoor guineapig :)
If I don't notice any weight gain I will take him to the vets this week, but I think he will be fine now :)
Just a pic of Mr T (tri colour Abyssinian who passed away) and wombat the Rex :)
