Hello everyone

So recently I came back after being away from my two guinea pigs for the whole summer. They were in my mom/family’s care and then someone else’s. It was a while so I thought they were nervous and having weird symptoms but their weight is stable and they’re running around and eating and pooping. I’ve booked a non urgent vet appointment.

The bigger problem right now is they seem to like chewing on the plastic cage bottom a lot more now. I gave apple chew sticks to help with this urge and they enjoy them. However the bottom chewing is still a problem. It had no holes at all when I got it back and now suddenly it does. I think the plastic is dnagerous and could cause digestive problems or worse and it’s better if they calm down and stop that.

Has anyone experienced this and do you have any ideas?

Yes, piggies do seem to have a dangerous addiction to chewing bags, gloves, brush bristles and Correx. The only way to stop it, as far as I know, is this cover the chewable parts with a cage liner or fleece blankets and pee pads. I haven't tried bitter apple which you can get online, but I think the results from it are variable judging from online reviews. I did notice that v my piggies, who looked to get their teeth into any soft plastic, have never chewed the tarp style floor of the Omlet playpen. Not even when it is sitting folded up in their cage and in a perfect position for a good gnaw. I wonder if there is something very unappetising in the material which protects it. I was also wondering if MidWest tarpaulins have the same disagreeable anti chewing quality. It might be worth a try. Of course there could be piggies out there who have chewed on Omlet tarps 🤞One never knows ♥️🐾

Could you tuck the fleece or cover over the plastic ?
I hope you can sort it ….little rascals 🥰

Mine will also chew the correx, the dustpan and anything else they can.
I make sure there’s always something like a hay cube, carrot cottage, seagrass tunnel or hay stuffed paper bag in the cage.
It gives them an alternative to correx to chew !
