So I got married on Saturday and today I am going on my honeymoon!! My pigs and rabbits have gone on holiday to the in laws who will look after them well. They moved yesterday. I went up to check them this morning and my first ever pig was dead! My husband got him out and we are from farming families and we noticed mites! We have treated his mate who is not himself. I feel so guilty I haven't noticed it before. I was heart broken. Will his mate survive while I am away? He will be getting lots of fuss. Also is it worth me getting him a friend when I get back? Advise needed as this is my first loss....

Very sorry you lost your piggy, we have the rainbow bridge forumif you feel up to it. Mites happen in some of even the sterilized environments....don't beat yourself up over it! It may have just been his time to go. I think on e you are back (congrats by the way) you can get in touch with a rescue and take you remaining piggy boar dating or you might find him a spayed wife pig! Hugs and again don blame yourself!

I am so sorry for such sad news. What a horrible shock for you. Did you take the remaining piggy for a check up? He will need an injection if he has mange mites. You cannot just guess which type he has. Your piggy will need a friend as he will be very lonely. You can take him to a rescue were he can choose his own friend. This will prevent any fighting. Once again I am sorry for your loss.

I am very sorry for the bad shock. Please have his companion treated for mites by a good vet as his immune system will be lowered from all the upsets. I hope that you will still be able to enjoy your wedding and your honeymoon!

Yes, you can rebond a boar of any age, ideally at a guinea pig rescue that offers "boar dating" under expert supervision to make sure that he is character compatible with a new mate - that is key for a stable boar bond, much more than age. It is really worth going that bit further for proper bonding as it minimises any risk for you to end up with problems down the line.
