Dexter and Ezra have their neuter surgery tomorrow. Wish them luck. Our vet is great and I’ve prepared as much as I can. I’m just nervous for them, this is my first time putting a pig through an elective surgery.

Good luck, I’m sure everything will be fine. I was in a similar position two weeks ago when my boy Bruno went for his castration. I was worried sick but he sailed through it with no problems. The only thing that concerned me was that the dissolving stitches didn’t dissolve and I was going to have to go to the vets to have them removed as Bruno was pulling on them, but my husband carefully removed them last night (he’s a nurse).

So they made it out of surgery and the vet said they are going great. I’m picking them up in about an hour. Now I’m just nervous for the recovery process the next few days. Fingers cross for no complications in the days to come.

Glad everything went well. Hope their recovery goes well too.

How are they doing today?

So far so good. They aren’t exactly themselves yet but it hasn’t even been 24 hours. They are eating and pooping which is good. They aren’t quite as active is normal but are moving around fine. Even though they are eating I gave them some critical care and syringe fed them water. I’m so paranoid something will go wrong.

Sounds like they are doing well, good idea on topping them up.

Theo sends healing wheeks! He had his op almost 3 weeks ago now and now he's fine and just counting the days until he can join his lady friends :)
I was so nervous I was sick, I felt like I was doing something really awful to my little piggy friend, but if your boys are eating and pooping that's a really good sign. It took Theo about 3 days to get back to his normal lively popcorning self, he slept a lot more than usual (and I kept waking him up to check he was still breathing!)

Glad it all went well, I also weighed Bruno everyday when I picked him up to check his stitches/swelling, it made me feel better to know he wasn’t losing too much weight (and even happier when he started putting weight back on)!

I’m still worried sick about them. They still haven’t drank out of their watter bottle. They will nibble on watery veggies so that’s some water intake. I’ve tried to syringe as much water as a can to them but they are pretty resistant to it. Their are some pee spots but it seems to be pee that just dripping out of them. Like when I pick Dexter up I can see a little pee drip out of him. I’ve never actually see them pee a lot. They eat some but their appetite isn’t back. I’ve called the vet to see what she thinks. They should be getting back to me soon.

They may be affected by the heat too.
Hope all works out well - they can cause us a lot of anxiety at times.
Let us know what the vet says.

After Theo's op he was just dripping pee out of his little willy and not noticing but that stopped after about 18 hours and we had proper wees the next morning. Hope your poor boys are ok! I think the drugs they get given hits them harder than the operation itself, I couldnt believe anyone could safely give ketamine and opiates to a 600g little piggy then expect him to wake up ok after an hour but they routinely do... please let us know what the vet says!

So I talked to the vet and she had us bring them in to give them sub q fluids. She also gave them some b vitamins with the fluids to help perk them up. She thinks they probably got dehydrated from not drinking enough. While we were there the vet techs got some more critical care in them too. Hopefully that helps stimulate their appetite more. The good news is, she said they still have normal gut sounds and their surgical site looks fine.

So I haven’t posted an update in awhile because my life has been pretty consumed by taking care of Dexter and Ezra. Good news is they are currently doing well and seem to be making forward progress. The day after the surgery they didn’t want to eat or drink very much even after the sub q fluids. They were also being quite terrible about taking critical care. They got sub q fluids Thursday-Monday before they would drink on their own. They stayed at the vet some days just so they could get as much critical care as possible in them as we were having such a hard time doing it ourselves. Yesterday was the first day we saw a significant improvement and today they both seem to be close to their normal self.
Our vet is amazing for all she has done for them. She came in multiple times on the weekend to give them fluids and critical care. Our vet is not open on the weekends so it’s a big deal she did that for them.

What a fabulous vet you have.
Glad the boys are doing well now

Me too. They were never doing horrible but they were very stubborn and took a long time to make significant progress. There has been no problems with their surgical site which is good. They must really have a hard time with anesthesia.
