Sunday night Dexter had to be rushed to the emergency vet. We had given Dexter and Ezra their night time veggies and heard lots of coughing. We looked and It was Dexter. I had several hard coughs and looked very distressed and uncomfortable. He then stoped coughing, laid down, started looking bluish and was breathing heavily. We hurried him to the ER vet. He was put on oxygen and his breathing stabilized. An X ray revealed no obvious obstruction or other issues. The ER vet doesn’t normally see exotics so he had a follow up with his normal vet yesterday as his breathing was still a little fast. He spent the day at his vet being monitored and examined. His breathing is back to normal and he is eating and drinking. Our vet theorizes he choked (even thought it rare in guineapigs) and managed to cough it up. It was probably very scary for him and his throat/lungs could be irritated from it. He got an anti-inflammatory and some antibiotics to hopefully prevent infection if he aspirated anything. He’s doing well today, fingers crossed he stays healthy and gets better. He seems like his normal self thus far. It was very scary and I’m so thankful he’s doing better.
