I went in as usual this morning to provide fresh water, hay and their normal food (veggies given in the afternoon) dexter like the others was running round pop corning and squeaking, i placed his food and hay in and he was happily munching.

We went to sheffield for the day as my aunt has been unwell for awhile so we thought we'd pay her a visit.

We came home about 6pm i went to give the guinea's their veggies - opened the shed door and all i could see was watery diarrhea all over Dexters hutch. i found dexter curled up in his box looking terrible!

i wrapped him up in a towel as he was shaking and my hubby took us to the local emergency vets - on the way there Dexter started having seizures.

When we got to the vets it became apparent dexter has (hopefully temporarily) lost the use of his back legs.

The vets taken his temperature and said it was really low. I asked if it was worth trying anything or if it would be kinder to have him pts. They said they would rather try for now and have taken him into hospital overnight to see how he goes. They told me they would ring me if anything happened or if i didn't hear from them tonight then to ring after half 9 in the morning.

The vet said it wasn't looking good :( he's only a year old and such a sweet boy 8...

I've just had a call from the vets - his seizures have become uncontrollable and he's not responding to any treatment he's currently being put to sleep.

I don't think i mentioned this in my first post but when i cleaned dexters cage out after dropping him off at the vets we found a ball of hay that had a red powder over it (possibly clay) the vet thinks it could be toxins off this powder- she also said it could have been epilepsy or even both.

I will be ringing my vets again in the morning to speak with the vet as it was the receptionist i spoke to a moment ago.

In the meantime that hay is going in the bin and i'm never buying that brand EVER again 8...

I'm so sorry to hear you have lost your wee Dexter.
We lost our Dexter very quickly a few weeks ago, I understand exactly what you are going though, it's not easy.

I would keep the packaging and a sample of the red powder if possible. The company that produces the hay really should be notified so they can recall the rest of it off the shelves incase any other animals suffer the same fate. What brand of hay was it?

Awww, poor lil buddy. I will give each of piggers an extra cuddle for him tonight. xoxo
