Hi everyone,

I was wondering if I could get some advice. I noticed that one of my piggies was drinking A LOT of water every day (roughly 300ml - he would sit drinking for around 20 minutes straight), and had lost around 200g in weight from the last time I weighed him (he is usually around 1250g). He is eating perfectly fine, and is as active as usual. After some research, I thought it may be diabetes, and took him to the vets yesterday, along with a urine sample. I have been controlling his diet for the past 4 days, with no carrot, corn, red pepper etc. reduced pellets and plenty of good quality hay as usual, just in case.

The vet said that his glucose levels were normal, but this may have just been a fluke reading depending on the urine, also depending on feeding times etc. She had a good check over and checked his temperature etc. and all was normal. She said it was very difficult to tell if it was diabetes, but the only thing to really do was to carry on what I was doing in controlling his diet. She also prescribed some antibiotics, in case he had an infection. She said it may also be kidney failure, but they'd have to do blood tests which can be quite dangerous, and the fact he is perfectly healthy other than the drinking led her to think it wasn't this.

I was just wondering if you all thought this was a satisfactory diagnosis? She is not an exotic vet, as we don't have an exotic vets anywhere near us.

Thank you :)

Perhaps another blood test, with normal diet (as you where controlling his diet, I.e. cutting out sugars) this would show if he was dealing with sugars, if you see what I mean. Good luck with your boy x

Hi!

The only way to diagnose diabetes reliably is by a blood test. The symptoms are suddenly very noticeably increased drinking and weight loss.
However kidney failure is much more common in guinea pigs and generally presents with the same symptoms. The latter is sadly incurable in guinea pigs and there isn't much in the way of medication to stabilise it or slow it down for any length of time. :(

Here are our diabetes diet recommendations. In most cases, diabetes can be controlled by diet but please accept that after an initial fad with many misdiagnoses due to the naturally high glucose levels in guinea pigs, diabetes does exist, but it is not a very common problem.

Thank you both for your replies :)

Wiebke, just to check, I did look through the diet page. Is lettuce (not iceberg obviously, but all other varieties) still okay for a diabetic pig? As I noticed the page said "The sample diet minus the lettuce and red peppers (green pepper is not as sugary) also works for diabetic guinea pigs."

Hamish loves his lettuce, it's probably his favourite vegetable, so i'd really hate to remove it unless completely necessary; I didn't think lettuce had very high sugar content?!

I would try to reduce the lettuce.
