We have a piggie who has suddenly developed cataracts in both eyes she also has high levels of glucose in her urine. The vet has diagnosed diabetes.

The vet has prescribed glibenese (glipizide) tablets, one quater of a 5mg tablet to be taken 3 times per day.

Does anyone else have any experience of caring for a diabetic guinea pig, particluarly any advice on diet and how to best get the piggie to take the medicine.

Thanks

Guinea pigs tend to have a high level of glucose in the urine as normal, is your vet aware of this?
The reading should only be taken after the pig has been on a test diet for sometime.
Cataracts occur quite frequently in pigs without any diabetic pre-disposition.
I would recommend you double check the diagnosis.

We have another piggie who has a badder infection and is being treated with Septrin. She lives with the piggie who may be diabetic and has exactly the same diet. Her urine was also tested at the same time and did not show high levels of glucose. Would you still recommend checking the diagnosis given this additonal information?

Thanks

Basically, yes.
