It was confirmed today that Finny has diabetes. The vet has given us advice as to what to do next. Change from muesli to pellets, cut out the sweet food and plenty of extra fibre. We also have to monitor his water intake which can be up to 200ml a day. Any further advice for diabetic pigs would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

I don't have much experience of diabetic pigs but one thought is that if you are switching to pellets try to avoid any that contain anything sugary like mollasses or any fruits which fits in with the vets advice of no sweet food. The Bunny pellets I always waffle on about are very natural in ingredients and don't contain any mollasses, they are made up from wild meadows or something like that.

I've found 2 on zooplus which look rather good. The first one being JR farm grain-less the other emotion prebiotic. I think i'll try the emotion first and try and get all the pigs on to it.

The emotion is good too though the Bunny has less fruit. All 3 are grain less. The Emotion is my standby when I can't get Bunny.

We had a diabetic guinea pig (Eaton), the hardest part was getting him to take the insulin (he was type 2). As long as you monitor their food for sugar they should be fine. We has some sticks from the vet to test his pee to make sure his sugar levels weren't too high. Getting him to pee in a clean spot so we could get an accurate test was also fun

I was surprised that they can recover from type 2 and this was the case with Eaton so you do need to be careful if you have to give medication rather than control with just diet.
