ok..worried now.. took yumyum to the vets 2 weeks ago, lost half her body weight and had diahorrea, vet couldnt find anything wrong..advised me to seprate her and feed her up..been doing my best not to overfeed her veg and make her eat more hay to beef her up..vet told me to do this for four weeks and go back.. its been two.. shes put on a little weight, not much but still has diahorrea.. I'm kinda getting frantic now, how can she properly put on weight if shes got diahorrea? she cant re-digest nutrients or anything.. going to ring them up again tomorow i think to get a app..
this isnt normal in the slightest is it?
can anyone help? 8...

Hey Amy,

I don't know what to suggest as none of mine have had it, but diahorrea in piggies is very serious - I'd go back to your vet with her.

xx

yeah I'm gonna.. I'm freaking out.. need a little carrier so ill have to pop out to pets at home to get one! 8...

Sorry, I wish I'd seen this last night. If it's really runny it can be life threatening and she might need an antibiotic, so ask you vet.
Have you tried human medicine? I've used it a few times and it worked although it did take a while to get my William sorted out.

Give 1/2 a tablet of Imodium, mixed with a little water (0.5/1ml).
(This can be repeated after 10/12 hrs if still no improvement)

Then crush a 10mg tablet of Buscopan, again mixed with a little water and syringe feed her this too.

Next, mix up some Dioralyte as per the instructions on the packet and syringe her about 10 mls several times a day.

Try and get some probiotic from the vet or online and give her a course for a few days to re establish the gut flora. Fibreplex is great, then there is Biolapis and Avipro. I used all of them on William. Avipro on it's own didn't work for him, so I used Fibreplex and Biolapis together.

I would cut out all veg until you get the diarrhoea under control, but you can give a small amount of banana, this sometimes helps to firm up the poops.

I think you need to find a different vet, he doesn't sound as if he's trying very hard to investigate this. I think there is a recommended vet list in the forum somewhere but I don't know how to post links, sorry.
I hope you get this sorted out. it sounds serious.

I can't PM you as you don't have enough posts but I have sent you a friendship invitation as I think you will get an email. Just to try and attract your attention. I'm worried about your little one!

thank you so much for your email, its not really runny but its not pellet form, rang the vets today and got a app for 9am 2m. i did check out the vet list, i dont have a car, i have a scooter but i wouldnt take cavies on it! the one i always use it about 2 and a bit miles away and i have to walk it with a cat carrier.
i did cut out all veggies but..no improvement, i dont have a syringe and ive gotta go to work now till 8pm, so ill see what el vet says 2m and try and get one from them.. ive spent 2 weeks worrying and feeling sick about it 8...8...

I've used similar treatment as Katdralion describes above and it really works!

Suzy

I'm sorry to hear about your little one :(

One of my girls had a bout of diarrhoea last year and lost a bit of weight. I took her to the vets after 48 hours just incase she had eaten too much watery veg. My vet put it down to a tummy bug and prescribed her with baytril. He also told me to provide her with lots of hay, not feed her any veg and make sure she drank. He stressed that I must take her back in 7 days time if there was no improvement or before if things got worse.

Luckily, the antibiotics sorted her out and she was fine with in a week.

Her poo's wasn't watery and smelly but looked like toothpaste.

Good luck xx

No probs, hope it helps!
You'll probably be able to get a syringe from your local chemist or doctor's surgery. Just don't tell them you're giving human medicine to piggies as they may not give it to you. Good luck! Oh and if she's lost as much weight you may want to start syringe feeding her critical care.
Getting them to a vet is such a worry for me too as I don't drive and live out in the sticks. I've had to learn to improvise and keep my own stock of medicines. ;) But some things only a vet can help!

Poorly tummy

xx>>>Hello
Sorry to hear about this.I had a similar problem with my sow Sally she developed the runs not really smelly but very loose. She appeared fine and wanted to eat but it just went straight through.
I took advice and treated her for scours very loose stools caused by diet changes, even too much lawn time ! or recent antibiotics which can upset gut flora.I did a occult stool sample for blood at home,i can send you free kit if you want and that was neg.
I cut out all veg / lawn and dry food and she just had hay and water for 3 days to allow the gut to settle...she hated this....but it helped.Gradually introduced very small amounts and cut back if it started again.Took a week to settle but it cleared and she is now back to normal.I am not saying this is what your piggie has but from my own tradgic experience of losing a piggie very quickly in two days from a nasty enteritis i guess this is not the case with yours or she would have gone down hill very quickly.Change your vet if your not happy.

thank so much guys, i dont think i can thank you enough, I'm so glad i found this forum otherwise it woyuld just be me going mad on my own! -c-c all your advice is amazing and theres so many things * guys know that i havent had a clue about so thank you!
I'm gonna go 2 moro morning, see what they say, steal a syringe and depending on what they say go get some human meds for the little hairy face!

I wouldn't tell the vet you're going to use human medicine on a piggy as most vets don't approve. You should be able to get probiotics, oxbow critical care, syringes (ask for a few, 1mls for meds & 2mls for feeding) and antibiotics if needed.
Best of luck!

Hi Amy,

As well as all the suggestions you've had, if there is still an issue there, I would very much recommend considering worming. This is the first thing that came to mind as I read your post. http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=47407

It can be dietary related, in which case the earlier suggestions should prove effective within a few days. :)

hey! i didnt sleep a wink last night, i sat down stairs reading and watching her to make sure she was ok..how sad am i?!
she was ok, she put on a bit of wieght, then lost it, so..she had a injection of some antibotics..i nearly cried, I'm rubbish with needles and squeeling cavies.. then gave me a packet of recovery and some more antibotics that i need to give her...got a couple of syringes.. really aphrensive about feeding her through it as I'm worried i may squirt it down the wrong hole! just got back from work..and the best news in the world..the was a couple of hard poos in the cage!!! so I'm hoping shes on the road to recovery.. *please!*

Yay for hard poops!
That's great news Amy, hopefully the antibiotics will do the trick. Did the vet give you a probiotic to give her? Sometimes they can get soft poop when on antibiotics and I've found the probiotic helps to counteract this effect. You give the probiotic an hour or two after giving the antibiotic.
Don't worry about syringe feeding, it's ok once you get the hang of it. If you put the syringe in from the side, behind the incisors, then there's no danger of aspiration. Just slowly give her a small amount at a time (1 or 2 mls) and give her a minute to chew it before putting more in. You'll be fine! :)

ive never been so happy to see a guinea pig poop EVER! i actually picked her up and kissed her and gave a massive hug..she looked at me like i was mental! ?/
hahaha! i dont get a probiotic, just a recovery sachet...where can i get a cavie safe one from?!
thanks again for all your help i feel much more confident now! -c-c-c
