Hello, I am concerned about our 3 year sow Diamond. I took her to the vets on 3/17 and she was put on SMZ TMP .6ml and then on 3/21 she went back and was put on a higher dose of 1.2ml. I have called the vets again today and gave an update that she is still stuffy and has lost weight. She is not eating as much as she used to and I think part of that is she is depressed from not being with the rest of the herd. I'm having a hard time getting the meds plus the critical care and bene back into her. Is there anything else I can do for her. TIA

Did you separate her from the rest? Was this on advise of the vet? How much critical care and benebac are you able to get into her per day? And what is SMZ TMP? Hopefully those questions will give the experts a better idea.

yes we did separate from the rest of the heard, it was because they were not is wrong with her. SMZ TMP is an antibiotic. We get about 3.0ml of critical care 2 times a day and 1 notch of the bene back 2 times a day. Thank you

Yes she was separated from the herd by the vets advice. The vet was not sure what is wrong with her and did not want the other 9 to catch whatever she has. SMZ TMP "This medication is a combination of two antibiotics: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections (such as middle ear, urine, respiratory, and intestinal infections). It is also used to prevent and treat a certain type of pneumonia (pneumocystis-type). "

Ok. Separating can be helpful but if she’s been in with them then it may be they were already exposed to whatever it is, if contagious.

you’ll have to wait for other experienced members for a better answer. Sorry I can’t help you more.

update- xrays reveled nothing, her lungs are clear. She still has a stuffy nose but the vet think maybe allergies. She is back with the heard and we just monitor her weight and her eating.

Maybe it’s the hay, I’m sure you can get dust free hay if it’s that that is bothering her
