Gus has been on a hay-pellet-water diet for two days and is still having liquid and very soft formed poops. He'll be off to the vet tomorrow, but does anyone have any idea why he might have this? We've not changed his food or anything and his cagemate Darwin is fine (if a little hungry!).

Thanks for the thoughts.

He had some powdered probiotic yesterday but it doesn't seem to have done anything. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

My vet swears by zantac 2mg/kg daily to sort out guinea pig digestive motility problems.
However if the poos are pretty liquid even after withdrawing veg, this would suggest an infection. Faecal culture and antibioitics may be called for instead of zantac

in this case...try a good dose of probioitics first (fibreplex best in this case I think) to get his gut flora back to normal.

(And keep an eey on his fluid levels - he mustn't become dehydrated and may need sub cutaneous fluid injection and you to syringe feed fluids til he recovers...your vet should be able to advise)

Vet's went very well.

Poor Gus had a Vitamin B injection to help his slow, gassy bowels to move and he's got some more powdered probiotic. She seemed happy with his general health and told us to come back Monday if there's no improvement.

He's chewing hay in his pigloo now, hating me and hating the world!
