Hi

Having rescued three sows last week with poor skin conditions (all of which are undergoing treatment) one now has diarrhea.

I took them to the vets on Wednesday and was told that the yellow flaky scaly skin condition is caused by a lack of vitamin C. They have been kept on a cheap major supermarket value range of guinea food. They also have mites for which they have been treated with spot on.

This morning the largest guinea has diarrhea and a messy bottom. The other two don't as yet. They are currently on a wide range of veggies and fruit to boost their vitamin levels as I don't want to add drops to their water.

Should I remove the piggie with the diarrhea into her own cage and cut out any veg and fruit, introducing it again slowly once things have improved? Then once sorted put them all back together in their hutch.
Should I keep them all together and just cut down or cut out the fruit and veg completely ?

Any advice would be appreciated please as these girls have had a rough time of it and I don't want to cause them any more stress.
Thank you
Claire

how much fruit are you feeding, that may be the cause..

do you give them unlimited hay?

personally id cut out the veg and fruit for 24 hours give them plenty of hay nad pellets and see how she goes then.

i would seperate, did you add the veggies slowly? so as to not upset their tummies. if possible get piggy to vet as runny poops can be fatal. give lots of grass and hay as these are good in fibre, give water so not to get dehydrated. i would cut out all veggies and just give them grass and hay for 5 days and then slowly add a veggie over 3 days, each day making it a bit bigger. then if all ok add another veggie-small bit over 3 days and so on. if on medication are they getting a probiotic for their tummy? i would suggest keeping warm and see a vet. good luck and keep us posted. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: sending hugs and cuddles to you and your babies :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :smitten: :smitten: :-*

Hi

Thanks for such a quick reply. I have only fed them small amounts of fruit and veg so far as I wasn't sure how much their previous owners had been giving them.

I have fed them on - obviously not all at the same time.

Curly kale.
Celery.
Spinach
2-3 grapes a day between the 3 of them.
Banana
Cress
Spring green ( They don't eat much of this - tend to just leave it)
Cauliflower (first time yesterday)
Cucumber - a couple of slices a day.
Carrot. - One a day between them.

They are also on Dodson & Horrel just grass for their hay - Topped up 3 times a day.

I have been mixing their value food with Wagg so as not to completely change their dried food straight away.

Sorry to hear about your piggie :'( :'( :'( :'(

I totally agree with everyone, have you intro'd the veggie slowly ? ? ?

If not don't worry this can be rectified just take the piggie off the veggies and feed lots of hay and pellet and water and then slowly bit by bit introduce one new veggie every i think they say every 5-7 days ? i need my more knowledgable mates to confirm this... this will all be from their experiences of course which is so invaluable O0 O0 O0 O0 also try to get your little one to have lots of water, hopefully she will drink it if not i'd try by spoon or even purchase one of the 1ml syringes they're the greatest to keep for emergency times O0

Can you separate but keep them beside each other that they can chat.... and even once the piggie has been seen by a vet and they say ok maybe then they can have supervised 'play time' together until the other is well again :smitten:
Sending heaps of healing wheeks and encouragement :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

EDIT: just seen that you've intro'd cauli.... if this is not slightly older a bit more green this can and i say can make their tummies a bit ikky if they're proned to it :(
Looks like you're feeding a good variety.... it could be just that piggie who's got a different tum to the others :(

Thank you all for the support . I will cut out their fruit and veg for a few days and start again a bit slower this time.

I do have syringes at the ready so i'l bring her in later and give her some water. I have to bath her later with lice n easy and she won't be able to go out again today because of the weather so this will give me the opportunity to keep my eye on her.

yeah just cut out the veggies and give plenty of hay water and pellets until poos return to normal, then introduce veggies slowly O0
is she drinking? this is very important as dehydration is easy when they have dihorrea O0
((HUGS)) hope your little one gets better soon :-* :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Give her some rehydration therapy. This is very important in any case of diarrheoa.I would not take her away from her friends because this will stress her. Just cut bac k on the veg and do not give any fruit or greens.A small amount of carrot, baby corn, corn leaves and silk,a small amount of tomato,in fact any veg that is not green is fine in small amounts. If the diarrheoa is very watery,a vet visit is called for because it may be a bacterial infection.Encourage her to eat hay and dried grass.

How is your little one today? Hoping she's feeling better :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: ((HUGS)) :smitten: :smitten:
Yeah i would give her some rehydration therapy through a syringe O0 you can use dioralyte or anything like that O0

All three had a bath yesterday afternoon and spent the night indoor last night.
The diarrhea problem seems to have stopped so i'l continue with the hay and dried food only for a few days with a little carrot and curly kale. Then i'l introduce the other fruits and veggies slowly.

Thanks for all the advice and best wishes received.

Claire
