My girl is about 5 years old. She was peeing blood a few weeks ago but then I took her off apples and it seemed to stop, so maybe the new food was just causing issues in her. Then she got mites and her hair was falling out but I gave her a nice hot bath and they all disappeared and her coat is super healthy now. She was acting weird the other day so we took out her bedding and took her off the Timothy hay (in case that was where the mites came from) and put a plain white towel down and her little wooden house to chew on. I was feeding her carrots but then her poop came out liquify and sort of reddish-orange so I’ve just been feeding her spinach and lettuce the past 2 days. She’s been overlyyyyy noisy, ‘weeking’ every time someone even moves. When someone gives her food, it’s like the first time she’s seen it. We just had my dads girlfriend and son move in so I thought that was maybe part of the overexcitement. She used to only scream when she was hungry or wanted some attention, now she does it no matter what. Anyways I’m just wondering what to do, and if there seems to be an issue with the poop or it’s just because of excess carrrots? When should I put her back on the hay (could the runny poop be part of not having the hay?)

Yes, the runny poop will be from not having hay I would imagine, id replace that asap and withhold veggies until the poops are back to normal for at least 24-48 hours. She will be acting hungry and noisy as they should be spending most of their time eating hay as it is 80% of their diet and need it in unlimited amounts, so she should settle once she has that again. When you say she was acting weird before you took the hay out, what do you mean exactly? I hope shes feeling better soon! :)

I agree with above. I would also suggest taking her to the vets, both for her digestive problems and the fact that mites will not be cleared up with a hot bath, they need proper treatment.

I would suggest that she is wheeling because she is very hungry. 80% of her diet should be hay (a guinea pig sized clump at least). Please put the hay back, if the hay caused the mites you need a new batch.

The mites will not have gone with a bath - they can be extremely painful, and sometimes fatal, which may be why she was acting strange), please see a vet for treatment.

The diarrhoea is down to the diet of only veg, remove the veg for 24-48 hours give hay and pellets and she will be back to normal.

Hi! Have you taken her to the vet at any stage? A guinea pig that is peeing blood has got a urinary tract infection, is passing a stone, has a bladder stone or cystitis (inflammation of the bladder walls).
Just taking her off apples is not the reason why she is "cured"; apples do not cause bloody urine. That is simply incidental, which means her problem is still there and can make a comeback again if it is stones, an unreated cystitis or ovarian cysts going wrong.
If she really had had mites, only good quality ivermectin treatment would have cured it, so the hair loss could have come either from ovarian cysts, malnutrition or seasonal shedding.

Please be aware that 80% of the daily food intake should be hay. Veg only makes about 10% and pellet 5%. By taking away her what keeps her guts balanced and is the main source of food, you have caused to upset them. You are also starving her by denying her the most important food source. DO NOT overfeed with too much sweet food like apples and carrots; that contributes to the tummy upset! Right now, you need to take her off any fresh food until 48 hours after her tummy has rebalanced with hay and the poos are looking normal again. Give her additionally a pinch of probiotics to help restock the guts. Weigh her daily at the same time to check her food intake and to make sure that she is eating enough.

Please have her vet checked. If you are on benefits, you can try a PDSA clinic.

Noooo don't take her off the hay. If she keeps getting mites normally a change of hay will solve the problem, the same if it is dusty. The hay is really healthy for them. If your piggy has Diarrhoea, take her off all veg. Then when she's been clear for about 2 or 3 days, slowly, introduce it back.
Hope the bath wasn't too hot. You need to see your vet about mites, baths won't get rid of them. Did you get the vet check the cyst, if it's gone septic that may explain it. Hope things look up soon.:luv:
