I did stick this in my dosage question but it will probably not be seen so figured id make a new thread just in case (sorry mods if that wasnt the right move, just concerned for little Shellybean, do feel free to merge them if needed!)

Basically Shelly was given Baytril Monday for a UTI. Her first dose she didnt get probiotics after because I'm useless and fell asleep after being up worrying most of the night, the other 2 doses she has had fibreplex an hour after. She has pretty bad diarrhoea now, although shes not passing much. She was eating really well yesterday but in the last couple of hours her appetite has decreased.

We called the vets to ask about swapping antibiotics and they will fit her in somewhere tomorrow if we call them first thing as theres no actual appointments available but she needs to be seen.

Shes had about 8ml of critical care, fibreplex, bio lapis in her water and a seperate water as ive seen her drinking, shes also had a little Pro C in the critical care. Shes eating little amounts by herself...dandelion leaves, grass, little bit of carrot and bran. She doesnt seem dehydrated (tried the skin tent thing and it snaps straight back) and her eyes are really bright. Shes walking about fine, shows no signs of bloating, her tummy is nice and soft and doesnt seem in pain when massaged.

I'm still rather concerned though, it's not like her at all to not eat voluntarily, if ever there was a pig id put money on never going off food, it was Shelly :( Any advice to help me get her through the night until the vet can see her is most appreciated!

All I can think of is syringe feeding some mashed up pellets until the morning just to be sure she's getting enough food and her stomach etc keeps moving as it should. I would stop (as I'm sure you're aware)giving her any veg/fruit until she's firmed up again.

I'm sure more experienced members will add to this shortly- I'm sending healing vibes for her!

My Mo got diarreah 3 days after being on baytril (dose was for a week and to be administered twice a day). I stopped the course of antibiotics as the vet said we should and just fed him hay and pellets until he's firmed back up. I dud notice his appetite declined while on the antibiotics and the vet did mention we might see that- aswell as treating them it can make them poorly as they do with us.

I'll be persevering with the syringe feeding, I keep finding horror stories about piggies going into stasis after getting upset by Baytril so really trying to do anything to keep her guts moving until the vet can see her :) I'll mix some of her pellets into it, hopefully she will like that more. Shes such a 'hands off' pig though, after 8mls she just kept spitting it out..she hates being handled and probably hates me even more at the moment, poor thing!

We've stopped the Baytril as per the vets advice so hopefully once its out her system she should perk up.. she wont eat her hay or pellets at the moment, but hopefully if she feels a bit less rubbish tonight she might start again. I really feel for her, antibiotics have the same effect on me :(

Thankyou, yeah they gave it to Bramble once after Baytril seemed to stop working and she really liked it. I think I'm going to ask for it in future and not let them give any of them baytril anymore.. I dont like it, the pigs certainly dont like it and it obviously doesnt agree with Shellybean at all :/ I'm hoping thats what they'll swap her to tomorrow!

As Jessie, s pigs said, mash up her usual dried pellet's and syringe feed !if nessessary!
Personaly l wouldent to worried if she seems not to be eating as much, the meds can upset the ballance of a pigs delicate tummy, but the main thing is that she is still interested in food , it will often take a while for things to get back to normal

Keep on syringe feeding but stop all the fresh vegetables, especially dandelions as they can aggravate diarrhoea. Mix some pooh from a healthy piggy into the syringe feed to help reestablish a healthy gut flora. Syringe feed food and fluids little and often. If you put a bowl of syringe feed in her cage she may eat it for herself.
Don't restart fresh veg until the diarrhoea has completely settled.

Oky doke, so I'm treating this basically like any other form of diarrhoea? Had enough of that with the pigs the last few months to be able to sort this out then! Just wish she would stop spitting the critical care out after about 5mls. At least shes finally letting me wrap her in a towel at least..

Just done a feed and put fresh hay in, shes had quite a nibble on that which is something. Hopefully she will continue without me watching.. I'm not sure what her poops are doing. No real sign of any diarrhoea in the cage, her bum had a little in the folds but it looked like a cecal pellet. When I took her out a poo dropped into my lap but it was squashed so it could of been one of Ivorys stuck to her foot..I followed her bum around with a torch for a little bit and there were a few poops that looks fairly fresh but she could of kicked them up out of the hay as she was running along. There were some pretty light coloured ones..I dont know. I guess i'll get answers from the vet tomorrow.

She is definitely starting to eat hay again by herself so we're going in the right direction at least, hopefully.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll update when we're home from the vets :/

My one concern would be 4-5 days of septrin is really not a long enough course. It's the right drug choice for a UTI but honestly, you want to look at a 14 day course. Is she due to go back for a review after those 4-5 days?

Very glad to hear her poops are doing better. Hay hay hay, best thing for her. a little cardboard like a toilet paper tube wouldn't do her any harm either. Light coloured poops are often a sign of GI distress, and syringe feeding can also cause a change in colour too. keep doing what you're doing, hopefully now she's been switched to the TMZ you will see a rapid improvement all round.

Thankyou, I hope so!

Yeah shes going back once thats finished to see how shes getting on, or sooner if it also upsets the guts.

Her poops are much darker now thankfully, shes got a clean cage with a nice huge pile of fresh hay which usually gets them all eating..I dont think shes had any yet but its been quite a stressful morning so maybe when things have quietened down a little.. shes more concerned with shoving Ivory around and telling her off. Shes not really lost much weight and shes certainly not lethargic so I think with time we'll get there.

Aaah okay good to know. I will keep my fingers crossed your little one has a hasty recovery now with the AB switch up. We've had many UTIs over the years and TMZ always does the trick and is so gentle on the tummy. Mine usually quite enjoy the taste of it too :) keep going with the donor poops from your healthy piggy, it's the best pro-biotic there is. If you're still support feeding her you can crush it into the syringe food and she won't even know it's there!

We have solids! :xd: this is the first one she passed, now theyre normal just a little teardrop shaped.

But yeah...what the heck is going on with this one!? I'm assuming its undigested grass from the absolute stripping of her guts yesterday? Whatever it is, ive never seen one like it before..

Looks like your girl's gut is still moving pretty rapidly imo, so undigested long fibres. It'll settle down. The fact she's got solid poops again is an excellent bit of progress. I bet another 24 hours from now they will be normal.

That's reassuring to know it's nothing terrible. I honestly had a few moments yesterday where it was just pouring out of her and I thought she was going to end up with stasis and id lose her, even though she was still so perky! Been up all night with her.. hopefully I can sleep between feeds tonight! XD

I dont think i'll ever take a solid poop for granted again after the few months ive had with this lot!

Oh I know them feels, trust me. Out of interest, did your vet give her any Zantac syrup? It's a gastro-protectant, it's very good stuff for upset piggy tums. I mean, she's probably going to bounce back fine on her own looking at her progress, but I wondered...

He didnt but I have some left over from Daisy who needed it a couple weeks back, she saw the practice manager whos a bit more cavy savvy. I was thinking about giving her some but wasnt sure if itd help or hinder to be honest. I mentioned Bramble to Daisys vet who is prone to upset tummys and he gave us quite a lot spare just in case so there should be enough for Shelly if needed?

See how she gets on without it for the time being. She's making very good progress. Don't want to overload her with meds if it's not necessary. But if she starts to go runny again I would whack her a dose.

She has started eating her normal hay by herself again :) ive been tempting her to eat with oat grass hay and dried grass from outside after stopping the fresh but she almost jumped out of her cage into the bag of hay so....I dont think she needs tempting to eat any more XDXD i'll leave a bowl of critical care in with her over night just in case but she stresses out so much when syringe feeding I'm going to cut that back now and see how she gets on by herself :)
