Yesterday when I came back from work I saw one of my boars Guiseppe had diarrhoea, it was quite watery but he was still himself so I stopped veg, gave him a bath as he had it stick to him and decided to see what his poo was like today. It was quite runny still and also his fur seemed puffed up(don’t know if he was just cold) I got him in the vets this evening but before I took him I realised georgie also had diarrhoea so I took them both. The vet didn’t say any possible causes and just prescribed baytril and selective recovery food for both.Does this sound like the right treatment for diarrhoea?, I’m reluctant to give them the baytril unless necessary as I know it’s nasty stuff.

No, it doesn’t sound right. Simon prescribes metronidazole for bowel issues, plus fibreplex and probiotic. Baytril is so harsh on the gut and often causes diarrhoea.
Thanks, I won’t give it then.I did think it was strange to prescribe that and the fact she never said anything about what the cause could be etc.

Seems to be lots of diarrhoea going about with multiple piggies (I’ve been posting about it as well as one of mine has it and so does a friends).
I’m asking if it could possibly be something in the hay - but then we would all have to be using the same type 🤔

I once had a piggy who was prescribed baytril and probiotics for diarroea but my vet did diagnose a stomach bug as she also had a high temperature. Thankfully she was back to normal within 48 hours of taking the baytril and probiotics

The best and easiest treatment I can tell you is to mash half an apple and let it stay in the air for some minutes until it gets a brownish colour, then either feed it like this or mix it with critical care or something similar. The apple reacts with the air and results in apple pectin, which is good for the digestion of guinea pigs. It isn’t harmful in any way and it’s a good emergency treatment until you can take the piggies to a cavy-savy vet.

Their poos are nearly back to normal now so that was a waste of £78 at the vets for stuff I didn’t need lol.

Put it in your first aid box :) I have some bottles of unused Septrin and baytril in mine. Obviously I would never give antibiotics without permission from my vet but once Ellen started with a uti in a Saturday and I couldn’t get an appointment. I rang my vet who gave me permission to give her the Septrin until I could get her to the vets on the Monday.

I’m glad that their poos are back to normal :)

Is that the same as using the apple cider vinegar then in some ways? Ie with the pectin in it? Not that I’ve ever given it to the pigs of course.

That’s a good idea, I think I’ll do that.I gave them a small piece of broccoli this morning and after 2 days of no veg they devoured it in seconds lol.
