Biscuit rumbles on with bouts of soft poop and diarrhoea but it seems to coincide with when she is in season. Regular as clockwork. Has anyone come across this before? I’m not worried I’m just wondering If there is anything further I can do to make her comfy - are there any foods or herbs good for hormones? We know she also has a cyst or lump on her ovary so that could be it.

Touch wood it has eased a lot recently so is more than manageable but still.

*(For those reading this who are new owners or don’t know the story diarrhoea is a take off veg then to vets if that doesn’t work in a couple of days or straight to vets if bloody or severe but Biscuit is a cancer pig and the tumors are causing the runs)

I've come across it in humans with the hormone change but not piggys. It's been 35 years since I had sows though!

My Bunny sometimes experience it (soft paste-like poop but not watery poop). Hubby and I often think it's because she eats less hay (well food in general) when in season and is busy chasing the other piggies. It also doesn't help that she will have the occasional gassy belly (she had some stomach ulcers we found out and treated early this year that may have caused her condition for the past 2 years).

I have not noticed it to be related to being in season. But my female piggy who recently had her thyroid cancer removed now has normal pooh when previously it was very soft and sloppy. So l suspect it' caused by the cancer but aggravated by the hormones.

In short, no! That shouldn't happen. I would recommend to have your girl checked in case ovarian cysts push on the guts.

Yes, I know it shouldn’t happen and yes she I know she does have either an ovarian cyst or a tumour but we are on end of life care here. I expected her to go before Christmas god alone knows how she has hung on so far. She is being kept comfortable and still has a good quality of life so I’m happy for her to carry on.

I was more wondering whether there was something other than injections that eased hormones which may help?

You can drain an ovarian cyst, but not a tumour, unfortunately. I have been in the same situation when what looked like a large ovarian cyst turned out to be tumour. Tanni lived another 15 months with it; she did increasingly suffer from bloat and tummy upsets in her last weeks in the degree her tumour was affecting the gut.

It is likely that any large ovarian cysts pushing on the guts are causing some gassing in addition to the soft poos, but that can also be the growing tumour.
I would see whether de-gassing meds like zantac and gut stimulants like emeprid from your vet can help. In mild cases, herbal gripe water for baby colics from a supermarket is also something that can help to disperse any gas bubbles.

Hormone injections will only work when you are dealing with a hormonal and not a cancerous cyst. If you are dealing with a tumour, then all you can do is keeping her as comfy and pain-free as possible or risk everything in a usually rather tricky make-or-break operation if the tumour has not already spread.

I am very sorry, but you are rather limited as to what you can do in this situation. :(

Thank you, we know the cancer has spread. It started in her kidney and there are signs in her liver so an op is not an option. I will have a think about gut meds.
