Hi all.

I have a lethal piggy, Pickle, who for the past week has had diarrhoea. I went to the vets with him the day after I noticed it and was told it may be a intestinal bug or coccidiosis. Pickle was put on 0.4ml septrin twice daily but there is still no improvement. He has passed a few smaller than normal poos but mostly sloppy mess.

He is still eating and other wise seems fine in self. He had a mix of pets at home gig nuggets and a fruity muesli mix (he has only been on the mix a few weeks after he started not eating his nuggets). He also has been having tiny bits of veg, a lot smaller amounts than usual because of this.

Just wondered if anyone could give any help/advice please. I know lethals are prone to digestive problems but he has been perfectly fine in the 3 years we've had him other than needing teeth clipping.

Thanks :)

Hi, welcome to the forum. I am tagging @furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary who runs a sanctuary for dental piggies and lethals.

Are you giving probiotics in addition to the Septrin? Also, if he has diarrhoea it is a good idea to give him rehydration fluids. I use Dioralyte but apparently Pro C from Pets at Home helps with this too and is also a probiotic.

I would also cut out the veg completely until the diarrhoea clears up.

Plenty of probiotic is needed if you are dealing with diarrhoea, and septrin is good if coccidiocis is suspected. When you say he has diarrhoea, is it really runny and smelly, or just fairly soft poos? When I had a piggy with serious diarrhoea, this was treated successfully using the antibiotic metronidazole (flagyl). We also used Questran (colestyramine) which helped to firm up the stools. I really hope your piggy will soon be better. I have lots of lethals here at the Sanctuary and they are such special little guys, and love life so much despite their issues. xx

Thank you Helen, and I'll try some pro c. Just started him on fibreplex today so see how that goes. Also completely cut it out, feel so bad when the other piggies are feasting and he's not but I know it's for his own good.

Furryfriends- I wouldn't say its runny as such but very soft at the stage where I'm having to wipe his bottom when I get him out.
Never heard of questran but going to look it up now.
Oh they definitely are special and so loving despite their issues <3
Thank you for advice.
