Just wondering if there are certain foods more likely to give piggies a funny tummy?

Casran had a dicky tummy today. Fortunately it seems to be over as quick as it began ... I noticed he had a dirty bot bot so kept an eye on him. Then he did a ginormous soft greeny poop. I boiled some water and let it cool and gave his behind a good clean with some cotton wool pads.

I kept him on the sofa and he just started doing normal poops straight away again.

The only foods he's had more of recently are sweet peppers and cucumber.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated x

Please take him off any fresh food until his poos have firmed up again for 24-48 hours and just serve mushed up recovery food in a bowl and hay. Some guinea pigs, especially older ones, have a more delicate digestion. if you get repeats, then it is worth testing out all veg to see whether there are specific trigger veg.

if the mushy poos don't get better within 24 hours or if his conditions worsens, please see a vet promptly.

Hi @Wiebke - thanks for your quick response.

His poops have gone back to normal straight away ... almost like he just had to flush something out.

But I will take your advice and keep it simple for a bit then watch him very closely as I reintroduce veg. They had a load of dandelion leaves yesterday - which I did wash, but you never know...

It can have well been the dandelion leaves, especially if they are not part of a regular diet.

Aww poor little Casran. It may have been the dandelions that did it, especially if they are not used to them as they can cause a bit of diarrhoea. I've started giving my girls dandelions again as there's loads in the garden but only a couple a day to avoid soft poops :)

@Wiebke and @aimzer I never knew this about dandelions! Thanks for sharing your knowledge/experience. I shall be much more careful. Freddie and Marmalade used to eat dandelion leaves by the bucket load with no reaction so I just didn't realise x

Grass and dandelions if not introduced slowly can cause tummy upsets (either diarrhea and at worst bloating), like any other food that is introduced in quantity. Just start with a little to get the guts adjusted, then you can build up the amount quite quickly with each following day. Some piggies have got cast iron tummies, while others can unfortunately react quite strongly to lots of new food, especially if it is juicy. Please count fresh dandelions and rich spring grass towards the overall daily veg portion.
