Hello and like I say sorry, I'm sure there is info on this I did a search and no luck.

My 2 and a half year old boar Tony has recently came of baytril as the vet thought he had a UTI. All was good till this morning he started passing blood in his urine as well as squeeking when doing so. He was doing this before the baytril treatment so a bit concerned as to why it would come back. his first treatment was an injection, followed by 2x daily 2.6 mgs for 5 days, so doseage wise seemed fine. He was still eating and active etc so no major concerns just hope he's not in pain. I appreciate any feedback etc and yes i promise he'll be back to the vet asap just want to hear what others on here have to say etc and i appreciate every piggie is different thanks alot, Sean.

P.S what a great forum!

Try searching Cystitis, bladder, UTI in the Health & Illness section. In the H&I board, up on the top right of the page are all the page numbers - underneath these is function button 'Search this forum'

There are many, many threads on UTI's on the board so a lot of reading ahead of you, hopefully they will help.

Hey, welcome to the forum. You need to go back to the vets if your piggie is still passing blood and in pain.
It may be worth talking to your vet about a antibiotic called 'Septrin' it isn't licensed for use within guinea pigs but it is widely used by cavy savy vets especially in cases of UTI's. The vet may also be able to give your piggie a painkiller such as metacam for any pain he may be in.

If it doesn't clear up it is well worth getting an xray/ultrasound to rule out bladderstones. Hope your piggie gets well soon.

If your pig seemed to respond well to baytril but then the symptoms reaccured then 5 days of antibiotics isn't sufficient length of time to beat the infection.

A few of my pigs have had UTI and have found that 3 weeks of the antibiotic Septrin to be the medicine of choice. Once the symptoms have disappeared the antibiotic still has to be administered to beat this often stubborn infection.

thank you all for the quick replies and will have a chat with the vet later re septril, and keep you posted thanks again.

Here are the relevant link from the best medical website for guinea pigs (guinealynx ):
http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html
http://www.guinealynx.info/stones.html
http://www.guinealynx.info/medications.html#Baytril
http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#bactrim (septrin is an oral form of it, prescribed in Britain and used more and more widely by vets, even though it is not licensed, but then baytril is sadly the only licensed AB)

If a UTI doesn't clear, it is adviseable to have an x-ray done in order to exclude a bladder stone. How long has your piggy been on his course of baytril for? UTI can be very tenacious; I usually ask for at least a 3 week course of anitibiotics at my vets.
