Did I Hear That Right? Piggies And Hot Weather

I went to a pet shop yesterday (will remain nameless) to get a few treats. I got talking to one of the girls who works there about hot weather and gps and what could be done to keep them cool. I was just interested to see if they knew their stuff as they sell guinea pigs. I was told that guinea pigs are from a hot country anyway and were used to heat like we are having at the moment. I said that mine were only just coping even though they are out of the sun and staying in the hutch as it is cooler than the run. The girl I was talking too said that it would be fine to put them in the run and not to worry about it being covered cos they didn't like the shade! Well I soon put her right on that one! I am more than a little concerned about the advice they give out to new owners who try and do the best for their new pets. I think this particular chain of pet shops need to train their staff better!
 
I agree. Wild guinea pigs from hot countries and the domesticated ones we have are very different. They evolve and change.

If that were true then dogs would live in packs and go hunting like wolves and we'd all enjoy swinging through the trees in the park on a weekend.
 
Wow that's awful advice! Guinea pig have been domesticated for so long that their genus doesn't exist in the wild now, just very very close cousins (correct me if I'm wrong). That pet shop sounds lethal to animals!
 
Well done for putting her straight. I think an informative letter to head office is in order. At my local pet shop today all the bunnies had frozen water bottles and were pressed against them but the pigs had none but loads of straw. One pig in a tiny tank had a frozen bottle though.
The chickens had kicked sawdust into their water and so there was no water to drink. I did tell the lady on the till about that.

I would report the hell out of her! That's awful advice that could kill piggies! I can't believe anyone would advise that.

What did she say when you put her right?
 
She blustered a bit then said that I must have misunderstood what she had said! I don't think so! I know what I heard!
