My boar piggie, Chip, passed away today. He was only 2.5 yrs old.

I had taken him to the vet on Wednesday morning as he wasn't eating and was very quiet. He was given Baytril injection and an anti-imflammatory at the time, and I had given him 1.1ml of Baytril this morning, along with some Recovery food at 7am. I left for work at 8.30am.

When I got in from work today at 3.30pm he was still very quiet and looked quite weak, I fed him some baby food (the vet's nurse had recommended some vege puree) but within 5 mins he was gone. He suddenly seemed to have a fit, was rolling around in his cage for about a minute, then just died. It was awful. I feel so terrible as I think I must have killed him by feeding him.

Could this have happened, or would he have been really ill for this to happen?

Am so sad

aw firstly I'm so sorry you lost your piggie 8...
Second of all I highly highly doubt you killed him by doing that, piggies hide illness very well due to them being prey animals, any sign of weakness in the wild would make them an easy target so they often hide it for a long time and hide it very well.
It sounds like there was something more going on with your piggie and he'd probably been hiding it a while or it could simply have been a freak heart attack if it happened suddenly like that, that sort of thing could happen to anyone anytime so please don't think you killed your boy,you did the right thing taking him to the vet, I'm sorry things turned out that way but I'm sure you didn't kill him.
Rip Chip xx

Hi Leigh, Life is full of what ifs and buts, you did everything you could for Chip, don't beat yourself up about the what ifs, he sounded like a very poorly pig and I am sure he had a great life with you, we cannot win every battle. Just remember the good times and not today. Big hugs and thinking of you but please don't feel it is due to anything you did wrong x

sorry for your loss.

it doesn't sound like it was feeding him that caused him to pass away. when i read it my first thought was that he had waited for you to be there to pass. x

HUGS

I think that Chip was rather hanging in there until you'd come back; whether you fed him or not wouldn't have made any difference in the matter of things. Piggies can go downhill very quickly despite vet treatment. :(

i had the same thing happen a few years back, i swear to this day he was scared and me beeing there made him feel better .

I am sure it was nothing you did, You just had a very poorly little piggie :(

HUGS HUN x

Oh I am so sorry to hear about your piggy but please dont blame yourself - it sounds like your piggle was very poorly and I am sure you did everything you could.

I've had 2 piggies pass recently, both seeing the vet, but sometimes they are just more unwell than they let on :(

Big hugs

xx

I am sorry you lost your piggie. But you were following vets instructions, nothing more you could do. I think he wanted one more little bit of time with you before he popcorned over the Bridge. xx

Aw, i am so sorry to hear of your loss of chip, you did everything you could, he obviously wanted one last cuddle before he made his way. One thing i will say is, 1.1ml of baytril in one sitting sounds like a large dose to me, though i am sure if this was the issue it would have been mentioned already and had a quicker effect.

Big hugs, sleep well chip x

Please dont blame yourself. As others have said, piggies are very good at hiding illness and it sounds like he was very unwell so what happened would have happened regardless of weather you fed him or not.

I know how your feeling, i had a piggie pass away in my arms on Sunday, right after i gave him a pain relief injection. It wasnt my fault, he was very very sick, lost the use of his back legs and we were waiting for consent to pts, but i felt so so bad. Curled the little guy up in my lap and fussed him until the end. :0
