As you know, our little boy Timmy passed away on Thursday night. Friday, Deedee showed very unusual behaviors throughout the day like sniffing everything (even the air!), roaming around the living room like looking for something, and freezing a few times like she's going in a trance state. We know she's looking for Timmy because Timmy became her shadow after they got along. Meemee doesn't seem to be bothered, but right away she returned to being very lazy like she was before we adopted Timmy (eat-sleep the whole time!). Timmy used to chase and try to hump her so she'd move around the house.

Saturday, Deedee showed aggression towards Meemee. She tried to mount her a few times, so Meemee ended up staying away from her the whole morning till noon (in the run on the floor) and Deedee ended up staying in their upper room of the hutch and didn't even get out.

Because of that, hubby became worried. The two girls haven't loss their appetite but the sudden change of Deedee made hubby thought of adopting a new piggie right away. He looked at websites and inquired to a few rescue centres that are near enough to us (around 2 hrs drive at most) but we cannot find a lone neutered male. He did see an 18 month old neutered male from RSPCA but it said that it had a complication after neutering, which we just had experienced with Timmy (so he didn't really like the idea of it). The other one we liked was unfortunately (for us anyway) had bonded to another guinea pig (RSPCA website wasn't updated). What we've seen are mostly females or pairs, which we wouldn't be able to handle.

So as much as I don't want to buy pets from the shop, it left us no choice. We went to 2 Pets at Home near us at around 4pm. Both shops each has a lone male guinea pig for adoption, but both aren't neutered. We ended up buying a 12 week old little girl. I'm not sure if we did the right thing. Did we get a new piggie very soon? The new piggie seemed to settle quite so fast and Deedee seemed to get preoccupied right away and is now curious with the new addition (at the moment they are in the play run on the living room floor but separated). As for Meemee, she's still her usual self, as long as there's food she's fine (she likes the new girl though).

I still cry everytime I miss Timmy, which is a lot of times. Hubby also mentions and remembers him throughout the day (which also makes me cry!). We just thought that getting the new piggie was necessary for the girls at the moment. But did we do the right thing?

i am so sorry you lost Timmy. Massive hugs

What you were seeing is the Hierarchy getting re-decided within their little group, as to adding another, you've done it now and we found that having a three-some of girls seems to work well... We went up to 4 unexpectedly this year after failed fostering :))

They'll probably be a little bit opf squabbling while they are sorting top pig out but it will settle down have a read of these

What's your new little ones name?

Once again sorry about Timmy, it is so hard to lose a much loved member of the family

Thanks for that. It seemed that the little one is now settling very well after just 24 hours. The 2 older girls are just sniffing and following her around. Deedee still is the boss as usual and Meemee seems to be telling the little one that she will also be the boss because she kept on chasing her until she squeaked for help. Hehe. But after all that, it seemed they all can get along fine faster than what happened with Timmy (it took them around 6 weeks to settle all together!). We decided to name the new girl Bunny, because he looks like a rabbit! Weird, because Timmy looked like a sheep, and now we got a new one that looks like a rabbit.

Bunny is a cute name. Make sure all 3 girls have a hidey each, when we added the Widget as a baby to our trio she was pestered for a day or two by Sasspy but it settled down. Hope all continues to go well :)

I know its hard getting another piggy so quickly.I had to do it with pebbles when fizzy pop died.Pebbles is now in a group of six and extremely happy. At first it hurt seeing poppyrose there instead of fizz.but she is a very special piggy.I TT think you did the right thing

I just don't like to think that we're replacing Timmy that quick (I know we can never replace him as he was very unique), but I know the 2 girls would get their minds off of looking for him, especially Deedee. At least now she has stopped roaming around the living room like there's something missing. She's interested with the new arrival. My 2 girls have seen and sniffed Timmy the night he passed away so I think they get some idea what happened (hopefully).

Bunny seemed to be so happy. She has been popcorning and running around so much. Apart from the common nervousness around us and the 2 girls, I think she's doing fine. We just have to monitor Meemee as she suddenly had the urge to chase her a lot and try to nip her. Hubby was holding Bunny earlier and I was holding Meemee when she nipped Bunny's foot. No wound or anything at all though. I think she's just too curious with Bunny coz everytime she goes near her, Bunny would dash away from her.
