did you do your home work?

I'm just wondering how many of you did your research about guinea pigs before you got one? i spent a few months and considered other pets as well as the pros and cons! and i think its soooooooo important to research as much as you can before you get one and once you have one. :)
 
From March until June I researched Guinea Pigs. I won't get an animal unless I know what I am doing. I've made mistakes with budgies and dogs before so I prefer to know.

I want a tortoise, red setter, rabbits, hamsters, chins, gerbils, OMG Mrs Noah eat your heart out! And after hearing so much about goats, ducks and hens I want some of them too!...LOL But lots of reading, I need a farm! :)

I researched and joined here and another piggie forum before i got mine to read up on them. I researched every pet before i bought them ecpet rabbits because i found one as a stray before i had any intention of keeping one but researched up straight away :)
 
I did my homework :) never found this site till i got the pigs though! I do think most knowledge comes from experience though and a lot of the stuff in books and on the net doesnt apply to some pigs, they're all different after all! I think you can over read too, the only way you'll ever learn is from experience i think :) p.s. I'm looking into getting a hammy too but it will be difficult with my blooming cat! x
 
i meant home work as in you should find out how long they live and see whether you can look after them for that amount of time and find our how much time, care and money they need! i just dont like impulse buyers really but i cant go into that :)
 
Oh yer lol i did all that! I got all the basic info on pigs, foods, housing, breeds, common illnesses but ive got most of what i know from having them :)
 
I did a week of research :P but i also have 2 close friends who have guienas so i got tips off them too.
 
I bought loads of books first, and i had a guinea pig as a child, so my mum told me a lot of their needs, and i looked on the internet as well so i did my best before hand.

I decided at christmas time that I wanted pigs, and started reading up about them. I didnt get the pigs until my birthday in february. By then I knew a fair bit (thankyou Mr Peter Gurney for your great books!) and had already bought tons of piggy stuff!

I must say that my knowledge of piggies has still doubled since using this forum though. Mostly because I take over over people's threads by sayng 'why?'. I just like to know as much as possible though. Thankyou all for educating me!

I'm the same and if someone asks a question I'll look it up, not that I'm trying to get in their first...lol But I like to learn about pigs, the more I know the better.

I'm very interested in their diets and their make up as well as vet care. :)
 
I'm interested in that stuff too. I'd like to be a rodentologist. The way my studying is going today though, I'll be lucky if I ever get a job with animals. :'(
 
I knew nothing about guinea pigs when I got my first one. I had kept rabbits, and when I discovered a neglected piggy in the neighbours house basement, and they gave it to me, I just thought "well whatever I am doing, its going to be nicer for the piggy than what it was in there..." so I just started from zero AFTER having my Lily..
 
I kept guineas when in my teens did do my home work back then before owning some. Then when Alicia was younger we had a few then I read up on them to refresh my mind before getting Hamish and Bumble.
 
My piggies were an impulse buy after the hamster died. I did zero research, although I had had one before as a child. Bought a couple of books, talked to the lovely lady in the pet shop, and off we went :) We've had them for over a year now with no problems.
 
When I was little I wasnt allowed pets at all but I loved animals so I used to spend absolutely hours reading library books on them
Its come in handy now :)
The librarian must have thought I was mad 98)
I got books on everything from budgies to exotic fish but I never got a single animal
Obviously before I got them I did research
However when we got the bunny we didnt know you were supposed to neuter them until it was too late and if we did it now it probably wouldnt stop him spraying :(
 
Thanks MnP that's for in the spring, just told my Dad I'm getting a shed in the spring to house them. He said were my lot going outside in the spring too I said no these are for rescues! He said so can you make money out of Guinea Pigs! 98) I'm fighting a losing battle with him...lol

Need to get a first aid kit for piggies, read a lot more (will probably find the books I'm after in Liverpool library). Would love to work with animals, but I'm torn between that and writing. Maybe combine the two! ;D
 
I went onto the internet and looked around for a couple of weeks and thought i knew enough, so we went and bought Duke and Sully from a pet shop.
I've since learnt that i knew NOTHING at all 98) 98) 98) 98)
I'm still learning all the time and with this wonderful forum i get to ask questions and there's always somebody who comes along and helps me O0 :smitten:
 
Somebody we knew in the village had some baby boars needing homes and the girls were saying 'Mum, Mum, can we have them, please, please....' so I did a bit of research into them and decided to agree.
But it's been mostly learning as we go along. The internet has been really useful in learning about pigs, both this forum and many other websites - Seagull's Compendium, Guinealynx, Cavyspirit and Barmy4Boars are the ones I've used most.
 
I made the mistake of getting a pet once without doing any reserch (chip monks) one of the biggest mistakes of my life i thought oh give them a few weeks of me handleing them and ill have them eating out the palm of my hand how wrong could i be, i bought them out of the local paper, then i ordered them a masive cage from the pet shop but when i fetched them i strate away opened the cage door to get one out it fled out passed my hand and did 100 laps round the room including cieling and curtans it took me 5 hrs to catch him with a towle he never came out again we ended up giving them to someone who did know what they were doing so when i decided i wanted a guinea pig i did lots of recearch and my god did it pay off. xxxxx
 
i did i looked around both piggies and hamsters, and read up on them.

then my mums friend said she had some baby piggles that would be ready in 4 weeks if i wanted two, so i spent those 4 weeks reading about piggies, finding out everything i could, and the woman i got them from told me more too when i picked them up.

in the end i didnt get the babies, as one had died, leaving only a boy and a girl remaining, rather than 2 of the same sex, so she said i could choose 2 other piggies. they were all in a big divided run in the garden, one full of girlies, and one boys. and i chose my 2 gorgeous boys :D

then shortly after i joined here, and learned even more :D
 
I must confess ( don't shout ) I went to the petshop with my son, to get stick insects, decided I didn't want them and came home with two guinea pigs. :D
Luckily the girl in our P@H kept them and gave me loads of advice, all correct, then I read books and looked up online.
So, researched the wrong way round.
I have now adopted two more and four is the limit.

This sounds like me, except that I didn't find the forum for about a year after I had them. I read a few books, but actually they are the easiest pets to look after I've ever had, very undermanding and low maintenance, so I don't really think a lot of research is needed.
 
I got my first piggy from a pet shop almost 20 years ago & did buy a book as my only bit of research.
I only found out about rescues when i joined this forum & since joining have enriched my piggies lives with the information i've gathered :)
