Hi all,

I've taken ****gy to the vet as he was starting to eat less and less, they've given him a full checkover and a series of anti-biotics and pain killers but can't find out what the real problem is. I've been advised to leave him as he is for a while as he's quite happy but if he starts to deteoriate then take him back in for x-ray.

He's attempting to eat anything we give him but he can't seem to bite through harder vegs like carrot. I've been trying him on soft things like pears and thinking of trying him with things like watered down cranberry or carrot juice.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks :)

haha i've just noticed that they've blanked out my guinea pigs name...it's not supposed to be rude but his brother who he had been bonded with before their fight was called scooby (like the programme scooby doo) so it was a obvious pair name.

We adopted him from a rescue and never changed the name.

Sorry Guinea Pig Forum!

Haha :x

hi, are you happy with that response from your vets? i think i would be going for a second opinion i am afraid, you cant just leave them for a while if they arent eating?

How about grating the carrots or using a peeler to make thin slices?

I'm really sorry, i hope s h a g g y is ok x

I'm not really sure, the vet I use is usually pretty good and he is eating more after the treatment but it's just hard stuff he can't eat. I get him out every evening to give him his veg and make sure he is eating and give him a overall health check.

I've seen him still eating the pellets so he is definitely getting food but I will admit it's not ideal.

sorry, i couldnt get back online last night, felt a right billy no mates!

Please let us know how your piggy gets on, and if you can weigh regularly its the best way to keep track.

Good luck hon x

Definately try speaking to Furryfriends as she is great with dental piggies.

You can make mush out of his pellets and warm water which makes them easier to eat and you get a syringe feeing compund called critical care which is great for when they can't manage solid stuff.

If he'll eat mush out of a bowl then great, if not you'll have to syringe feed to keep him going. Once a guinea starts losing weight it can be hard to get them back up especially if you don't know what the problem is.

Try and get a diagnosis asap even if it needs a second opinion. Soundslike teeth or jaw problem to me.

Thanks to everyone who replied :D

Yea I am weighing him regularly and at the moment he's maintaining the same weight. I've already used the critical care food and he takes it really well both from a syringe and takes it straight of the spoon.

Hopefully he'll stay that way (or get better would be good!) but as soon as his weight drops he'll be back down the vet. Keep you all posted :D

Well i'll definitely be changing my vet... S-h-a-g-g-y seemed to be improving untill he suddenly started losing weight, took him to a different vet who basically said that I had been right all along and that it was his teeth. Trimmed his back teeth there and then with a £80 difference in price!

He should be all happy and healthy again in a couple of days :D
