hi, my pig, Rose, has been having bladder issues for a while now, my vet has done everything possible and she has suggested we put her on a "diet". Has anyone had success with the RateWatchers diet on the Planet Guinea Website? Any help/ suggestions would be gratefully received! :)

what do you mean by bladder problems?is if infections?stones?or similar?

if its any of the above has an xray been done?also is she on cystaid/cystease?this helps with bladder problems!

depending on what the problem is ie stones?you need to cut out a lot of carbs in her diet IE cabbage limited to 2 times a weeks kayal, spinach etc have a look at laura ccc4 chart of what foods can be given daily and things once or twice a week..cystaid /cystease is very good i have a boar on it after suffering bladder stones x

I have just started the ratewatchers diet and some people on here also feed it. You may want to have a look at my thread here where i have asked some questions about the diet. http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=51938

My guinea pig also has some bladder issues and he has been for xrays which showed nothing, but he is still squeaking whilst weeing, he isnt passing any blood which is good i think?

At the moment he is on metacam, septrin and on day 6 of cystease. He does have arthritis in his back legs which could be the problem, but as he has been on the septrin for a month on the 27th July he is having another xray next week, just incase any stones have formed.

Maybe provide more information about Rose's condition so others know what you mean about bladder issues. :)

Sorry i was a bit vague with what i meant by bladder problems, she has been xrayed and no stones showed up, it seems like she has a very stubborn infection? shes on baytril/metacam, which does seem to be easing it, I'm back at the vets in the morning so i could ask her about cystease, ive never heard of it! she has a varied diet at the moment lots of hay, nuggets, and lots of different veg (i cut down on cabbage and carrot to a treat once a week) she also has around 3 hours out in the run everyday. i also put her and her cagemate on vetbed as she was lying in her wee which i think was making things worse.

Thanks for the link J&G :) i will ask the vet about it tomorrow, at this point i think anything is worth a try!

I feel the same, I just dont know what else to do, thats why i changed to the ratewatchers diet as its supposed to be for 'bladder health'. Hope that your piggy gets better soon, UTI's are horrible things. When was the last time she had a xray and how long has it being going on for?

:)

you could ask for a diff antibiotics as baytril is very harsh on there gut and can cause more problems on guineas using it long term i would ask for seprrim that is for water infections, also ask for a dye to be injected into the bladder as some times stones dont show up on xray where when having the contrast dye blockages can be seen then she may also have slush in the bladder..are use using a probiotic too?

I agree that Septrin is the better choice of AB for bladder infections, it is also far more gentle on pig's small tummies. Hope you see some improvement soon.

J&G, she had an xray 3 weeks ago and nothing showed up, shes had the problem on and off since xmas, but this is the worst shes ever been

Clairelove, i asked about septrin, and the vets don't have it (apparantly) so thats why i went with the baytril, she seems to be doing ok on it, and she has probiotic just over an hour after she has her baytril

Thanks for all the advice :)

Similar here with regards to the xray. Gizmo has been having his problems since the end of march and had xrays, abs's and nothing seems to be shifting it, thats why i want another xray. Is she peeing blood? As i know this can be an indicator to stones or maybe if everything else has been rules out have a look at intestinal cystitis on guinea lynx.
