Diets...

I'm going to be putting my guineas and rabbits on diets... coz i want them to live as long as possible... any suggestions? Wilson is a big fatty he weighs about 1.2kg and is nearly one year old... is that overweight?

Can i just mention, you said you're GOING to put them on a diet. But then you're asking if Wilson is overweight. You should check all your animals very carefully first and perhaps ask a vet for advice.
 
I would be very cautious about putting animals on diets - especially with rabbits and piggys who can become very ill if you change their foods suddenly.

If you do have reason to believe that one of your animals is overweight (a vet will be able to confirm), perhaps you could just ensure that they have no commercial treats as these tend to be high in sugars, plenty of hay and veggies and encourage them to exercise more. I have a overweight sow from the freeads. The vet agrees that she is overweight but recommended only that I provide a balanced diet and exercise (something she didn't get before!) and monitor her weight weekly. No 'diet' at all.
 
I would just curb any commercial treats as already said and stick to thier normal diet maybe alittlke less dried food but excercise is probably needed more then putting them on diets, my dog max was a paunchy pooch but i refused to put him on a diet just cut out all the extras hes now a lot slimmer, and no diet playing with a ball in the garden helped, not bad considering hes 14 knackered me more then him ;D ;D
 
I definitely wouldnt put them on diets, just give them more exercise as has been said and no pet shop treats maybe even cut out fruit, just give hay, veggies and dry feed.
 
yer at the moment i feed them hay, veg and dry food... no fruit... i think they definatley need more excercise though, we are trying to get the backyard into shape so they can go in a run on the grass...
