Hello all,

My guinea pig Juniper has had an ongoing medical issue since January this year. Doxycyline and baytril wiped her out, and ever since, shes been very intolerant to all foods. She even stopped eating her poos, and they smelt vile. Multiple vet visits, fecal tests done, no issues were found.

She was ok for a while, average weight 820grams, always active, eating hay and her daily bell pepper for vitamin C. But recently shes even been struggling with Bell Pepper.

For a week, I have completely removed veggies from her diet to try and stabilise her belly, and i have introduced a teaspoon of Burgess Excel pellets (she used to be on these) and a selective Vitamin C treat. For the past month, I have also been giving her poo soup around 2 times a day if Fig allows me to have her poos. Shes a very healthy and happy pig.

For about 3 days, her poos drastically improved, she even started to eat them again and they smelt normal. But once a day, usually around midday, she does a batch of really soft poos. I dont understand why, or what I am doing wrong. Her weight has been fluctuating between 785grams and 820 grams depending on the day.

I feel I have done everything in my power to treat this dysbiosis or sensitive gut. I want to start giving her veggies again as I am worried she will get scurvy. But whay can I do if she cant tolerate anything?

I have a vet appointment tomorrow, so hopefully they can advise.
Anyone got any advise?
Maybe start filtering water? Take her off everything but hay? Idk. Anything would be appreciated.

Thanks all.

Replying to my own, to add more.

They are on a blend of soft and course hay from Haybox. Could moving onto course hay be better? As i see that soft cut hay can cause soft poos, during the week i had to temporarily use a different hay and thats when her poos were a little better.

How long did you do poo soup?

My boy needed it for two weeks.

Id say 2 weeks ish, it was slightly intermittent as Fig would not give me amy fresh poos. Was a fight to get the ones I did

I’m sorry to hear this

Unfortunately doxy can really wipe out the gut and for a long time afterwards.

Give her poop soup as much as you can but also you can give a commercial probiotic a couple of times a day (commercial probiotic and poop soup can both be given at the same time)

Yes the soft hay can cause digestive upset in some piggies and I would think if she was already having issues then she may be more susceptible to being one of the ones who does have issues with it

The pellets contain vit c and you are giving a vit c supplement so scurvy shouldn’t be too much of a concern

Thanks both.

I have bought a bag of the same temporary hay to see if that helps help.
I'm hoping the vets can give a good vitamin C supplement and ill try and give her poo soup as much as possible, even if its once a day. Fig is really protective over her poos.

Some positives are that this week Juniper has been eating her poos again. Made me so happy I cried lol genuinely felt like id never see her do that again.

Overall, shes really happy and healthy, besides the belly and poos.

Juniper is really beautiful, those lovely big eyes melt my heart!
When I need to give VitC when any of mine are recovering from illness I use ProC, you can buy it in Pets at Home or on line from places like Vio Vet. I mix it in syringe feed if I'm feeding that or mix it in water and syringe very carefully in small drops so as not to aspirate. My vets recommend ProC but not in the drinking bottle.

If you can only get poop soup once a day then she will need that commercial probiotic - pro c or Fibreplex - for the other dose during the day.

Ok! Regarding poo soup, the forum page is really helpful. If I did 1ml of poo soup at 4pm, and then another at 10pm, is that ok? I try to make it as concentrated as possible (1 poo, a tiny amount of lukewarm water) so its mostly poo and not primarily water
