Today I went to P@H to pick up some bird feed and, of course, I couldn't resist checking in on the guinea pigs there.

There was a lovely jet black piggy sitting quietly by himself in the adoption section, so I enquired about him as he was very still under his log hidey. One of the staff asked if I'd like to hold him, so I naturally couldn't say no and had some cheeky snuggles and kisses for a good 10 mins! According to the lady (who I watched sex another guinea properly and is very fond of them herself), he's only been there for three days and was brought to the store after his cagemate passed away and the owner (a young girl) had lost interest in him. They'd tried to bond him with another piggy, but the other guinea didn't take to him and he had to be separated.

As I'm sure you can see where this is going, I almost came home with him there and then! I'm still debating whether to go back... The boyfriend has said I could, but I'm no longer allowed to go to P@H by myself anymore! :D

Aww! Gotta love piggies, but watch out a trip to Pets at Home could result in a serious increase in the amount of piggies you have! We almost came home with a pair of (boars or sows we didn't know) piggies to keep seperately from our other pair! If you are willing to take care of him and you have the space needed I don't see why not!

Go for it!
The only thing stopping me from getting another pair is the time of year. Mine have to live in my shed so I don’t want to bring new piggies home and then have to keep them outside all winter when they’re most likely used to being inside

Oh, I definitely asked the wrong people here. :D

My concern is whether I should be supporting the actual rescues rather than P@H in this case. That's the real dilemma!
I see it that if he wasnt brought in to pets@home, he would have ended up in a rescue or on some rubbish like gumtree, possibly free or very cheap ( snake food or clueless new owner risk) I only see it as supporting pets at home guinea pig suppliers if you buy a young " brand new" one.

I spotted a gorgeos lone adult abyssinian boar at brunos petstore near me. But i had to resist as i cant put two boars with one sow. Dammit lol

I say go get him if you can pair him up :D

:agr: you should get him he deserves a loving home :)

But the little one is a rescue and although I'm not a fan of P@H, they did take him in so you would be rescuing him

GO GO GO!

I don't see this as being supporting p@h in a direct sense. The more piggies that are rescued from their adoption centre will simply just help to show that not everyone wants the new babies and as long as there is an upward increase in their adoption numbers then this will show the chain the benefit of adopting and not buying.

The little fella needs a home, go quick before he goes 😊😊😊

I'm probably going to make myself unpopular here - but you'd be better adopting from a rescue.

A lot of the piggies in the Pets at Home adoption Centre are ones that were on sale as pets until they got too old to sell . Some are returned pets.

I appreciate some people don't live near enough to a rescue to make adopting from a rescue practical - but , if you are able to travel to a rescue, please give the "Pets for Adoption" section a wide berth .

In my case my two were sick as pups and went into the adoption part because they had to be in quarentine then the herd was gone by the time they were well enough to join back. A rescue would be better though yea. But how do you know if a rescue pig has come from pets at home in the first place or not? to someone who has got bored or neglected the pig and then it has gone to the rescue? Your probably just getting the pig further down the line. Supporting rescues though is the best part £££

I honestly can't trust myself in P@H, everytime I go in it's a struggle not come home with a pig or two! Your story is similar to how I got my Rory.
We had nipped into P@H to kill some time while we waiting for some papers (?) after swapping our old Citroen for a disability car, and I saw this beautiful cheeky guinea boy in a cage all on his own. There was a girl next to me who was more interested in the rats up for adoption but wanted to know about him as well, I think at that point my brain just went "No!!! He's mine!!" and I got to hold him and came home with him......... We didn't have a cage or anything for him but I knew we could make one next day, so he spent the night in an old bird cage in my room.
He was a very special boy, you could tell, very cheeky and very friendly and unafraid of anything even as a baby. He chewed his way out of the box on the way home!

sorry i rambled a bit

I guess everybody sees rescue differently, usually when the piggies have become too old to sell their little sign next to their adoption counter says "we have been in this store for a long time and are looking for our forever home" I often see this with red eyed piggies when I've looked in on the adoption section before

I wouldn't be at all surprised if most of my rescue pigs originate from pet shops . I didn't buy them . I want to do everything I can to stop animals being bred to supply the pet market.

Is that the pet store at Wilton locks? I got my late Sam (my avatar) from there. That was before I knew about rescues.

Yea i got told by a few pet shop workers that white fur red eye pets get seen as lab exerpiment animals and thats why people dont choose them. Rats being the most unwanted

Yep i bet hes still there too, the shop is a bad place, but they have a good selection of food. I last noticed they have ferrets next door to the guinea pigs. Both runs had open tops. Not good

Oh it’s so sad, this poor piggie obviously needs a home, he has no control that he’s been passed into P@H, surely there must be a better way to protest about pet breeders and pet shops etc?. (Don’t get me wrong I find all breeders and pet shop practices terrible, it’s all a nasty trade whatever the animal) and I know purchasing anything from pet shops funds them all the more.

If you think this little guy will fit into your herd then go for it, it’s not his fault, is it. Pics pleeeeese...
