My oldest boy (6ish, he's a rescue) isn't doing too well at the moment. It's nothing specific, in himself he seems ok, bright-eyed, moving about etc, but slowly lots of little things have been building up. Over the last year he's started to lose weight, to the point where he sometimes feels skinny when he's always been a little fatty. Then I noticed a scab on his side, which gave way to a lump growing out of his skin. It doesn't hurt him and it's not open so obviously there's some type of tumour there. Then over the last couple of days he's become extremely fussy with his food, which has been happening on and off but at the moment he's only eating tomato, kale and grape and he also seems to be having a bit of trouble picking things up, although when he's got them he seems ok so I don't think it's anything to do with his teeth.

Anyway, all this boils down to the fact that his time is obviously coming (sometimes you look at them and you just know, don't you?). The difficult question is do I pre-empt it and take him to the vet while he still seems fairly content and therefore send him off relatively happy? Or do I wait for a couple of months until he clearly isn't happy anymore? If I do the first one I run the risk of feeling like I cheated him out of his final moments, and if I do the latter then I'll feel guilty he had to feel noticeably bad before I made the decision.

I hate this bit :0

OOO hun big hugs and loves being sent your way.
I think you have to go on your instinct. If you think its not quiet his time but its coming them give him a few more happy months. It would probably pay just to get him checked out anyway just to make sure there is nothing making him uncomfortable that cudnt be corrected if you get me and also just to put your mind at rest.

*hugs*

I sort of just had this but with a younger boy, are you sure his back teeth are ok? If you can get to a vet that can check them without ga I would try cos could have a splinter bothering him.

I would say if you get to a point where you are having to syringe feed him that won't be good, it's hard work. If he is ok in himself & still eating then I personally would leave him but it's when they are miserable & can't eat for them self etc. If he's quite bright then he is maybe just slowing down with age, if it were me I would try let nature take its course if he seems quite happy. You could syringe feed him some baby food to try build up his weight just along with what he's eating by himself. X

Hi i'd be seeing a cavy savvy vet :)
They can check his toofies as this does sound like it could be the problem?
I know in old age they do loose weight.......do you weigh him regularly? I weigh weekly and then i can monitor if there's a problem. I'd get that lump looked at also.
6 is a very good age, even with dental problems you can have a piggie turn around and be able to eat properly again, if they get specialised toofie trims.
GOOD LUCK XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

My old sow started losing weight rapidly(they thought it was either diabetes or kidney failure) and I made the discision to let her go before she lost any more weight and died of starvation(her food just didn't digest properly)

Thanks everyone. I honestly think his teeth are fine because he's eating his dried food/hay, just become very picky with his greens which is not like him at all - my local farm shop on the other hand is definitely profiting, I think they might have to name the new barn after me! He just seems like he's not really enjoying things anymore. Two months ago he had a bladder infection as well so I feel as if it's all just letting me know what's coming, easing me in although I have to say in many ways it's better when they just drop dead - shocking, but in the long run less of an emotional rollercoaster because you know they went out happy, in familiar surroundings and with their friends by their sides.

I'll take him to the vet and see what they say, although I have a feeling the options will be P.T.S there and then or take him away for a while until he gets worse - prime rock and hard place territory.

Good luck at the vets. Don't give up on him just yet if he's still bright eyed and the vet can help. You'll know when he's not happy and ready to go over the bridge. x
